According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Freidman, former Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was among five players from the Vancouver Canucks added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list on Friday. Defenseman Alexander Edler, defenseman Quinn Hughes, forward Zach MacEwen, and forward Antoine Roussel, and a player that is on their taxi squad were also added.

Per the NHL’s press release, the reason a player is listed as “unavailable” due to COVID protocols includes: (1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons.

Defenseman Travis Hamonic and center Adam Gaudette, who have both tested positive for COVID-19, were already on the list.

The NHL announced on Thursday that all Canucks games through Tuesday have been postponed. The Canucks are targeting to return on Thursday at the Calgary Flames.

Four Canucks games have been postponed so far and they have not played since March 24, a 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

The Canucks entered Friday six points behind the Montreal Canadiens for fourth place in the North Division standings, though the Canadiens have three games in hand on them. They are currently tied with the Flames for fifth.

Holtby, who is 4-6-2 with an .894 save percentage and a 3.57 goals-against average in just 12 games in his first season with the Canucks after 12 years in the Capitals’ system, has played in only one game since March 3 and two since February 22.
