Just two periods after tying Brendan Shanahan in Even-Strength Points, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin not only surpassed that mark, but in scoring his second goal of the Caps’ game against the New Jersey Devils, the future Hall of Famer passed another NHL legend in Multi-Goal Games.
Finishing off a pinpoint passing sequence from T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov, Ovechkin fired his 17th goal of the 2020-21 season past New Jersey goaltender Scott Wedgewood in the third period, extending the Caps’ lead to 4-0.

In doing so, Ovechkin passed NHL icon Gordie Howe on the Multi-Goal Games List, moving into fourth all-time with his 148th career multi-goal game. He now sits seven from surpassing Pittsburgh Penguins great Mario Lemieux (154), 11 from Brett Hull (158), and 52 from surpassing the all-time leader, Wayne Gretzky (189).
