Alex Ovechkin Scores Goal #717 – Ties Phil Esposito For Sixth Place On All Time List

Alex Ovechkin scored his 717th career goal Monday night against the Sabres in Buffalo.  The tally came in the waning moments of the third period, with the Capitals leading 5-0. The goal ties him with Phil Esposito for sixth place on the All Time List.

Ovechkin said after the game “Obviously, it’s nice to be in this company. I just do what I have to do. I try to use my chances and move on.”

Earlier this season, in the Caps 4-2 loss against the New York Rangers on February 4, Ovechkin passed Mike Gartner to take over sole possession of seventh place in career goals.  On January 30, Ovechkin tied Mike Gartner in career goals when he scored an overtime game winner against the Boston Bruins.

Ovechkin’s next goal will move him past Esposito for sole possession of sixth place. The next goal scoring milestones will be to tie and then pass Marcel Dionne who is in fifth place with 731 career goals and, after that, would be Jaromir Jagr who is in fourth place with 741 career goals.

In addition to adding his 717th goal, he has gotten closer to the 1300 NHL point milestone.  He needs one more point to reach 1300 career points.
