Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin Scores Career Goal No. 714; Four Goals Shy of Passing Phil Esposito For Sixth-Most Goals in NHL History

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his eighth goal of the season and No. 714 of his career during Sunday’s clash with the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. He sits four goals shy of passing Phil Esposito (717) for the sixth-most goals in NHL history.

After trailing 1-0 during the opening frame and over midway through the second period, Ovechkin tied the game 1-1 at the 15:11 mark. Forward T.J. Oshie and defenseman Zdeno Chara assisted.

His eighth goal of the season marks his 714th career goal. The Great Eight is now four goals away from passing Phil Esposito (717) for the sixth-most goals in NHL history.

Additionally, this is Ovechkin’s 363rd road goal. He has passed Steve Yzerman (362) for sole possession of the second-most road goals league history.
