Bringing the Fire: Hathaway, Sprong, & Eller Give Capitals 3-1 Lead Over Devils

The Washington Capitals opened the scoring early in Saturday’s matinee clash with the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center. Forward Garnet Hathaway gave the visiting team a 1-0 lead and 91 seconds later, forward Daniel Sprong extended that lead to 2-0. Just over midway through the first frame, center Lars Eller made it 3-0 for the Capitals.

Hathaway picked up his third goal of the season at the 3:36 mark in the first period from a great feed by defenseman Justin Schultz and forward Carl Hagelin.

He is now the 15th different Capital in 20 games to score the team’s first goal of the game.

Ninety-one seconds later at the 5:07 mark, Sprong netted his second goal in four games and gave the Capitals a 2-0 lead. Defensemen Brenden Dillon and John Carlson assisted, which is Carlson’s fourth straight game with a point.

Eller would score his fourth goal this season at the 13:40 mark in a 3-on-1 situation with forward Conor Sheary and captain Alex Ovecchkin.

The goal is Eller’s tenth point of the season in just his 16th game.

The Devils would convert on the power-play with a goal from center Nico Hischier, cutting the Capitals lead to 3-1.
