Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 709th career NHL goal during Thursday night’s clash against the New York Rangers. He is now in sole possession of seventh place on the league’s all-time goals list, passing Mike Gartner.
Ovechkin netted his third goal of the season 11:01 into the final period, narrowing the Rangers’ lead 3-2. Center Nicklas Backstrom assisted.

Ovechkin’s career 0.61 goals per game average is the highest among players with at least 700 career goals.
