Head coach Peter Laviolette announced to his team at practice on Tuesday that Washington Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek was named the league’s rookie of the month for January.

The 25-year-old went 5-0-2 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average in the month. He assumed the Capitals’ starting goaltender role after Ilya Samsonov tested positive for COVID-19 on January 21.

In his NHL debut on January 15, Vanecek made 30 saves in a 2-1 win at the Buffalo Sabres. His .968 save percentage during the game was his personal highest during the month.

Vanecek has started seven consecutive games for the Capitals. The Capitals cheered for Vanecek after Laviolette announced to the team.
