Capitals’ Martin Fehervary: “Every Chance I Will Get, I Will Try To Prove That I Earned It”

On Sunday, Washington Capitals defensive prospect Martin Fehervary spoke to the media on a Zoom call following the team’s second and final scrimmage during the 2020-21 training camp. He discussed how ready he is to make the Capitals’ roster this season.

“I’m challenging myself and competing hard,” Fehervary said about the new faces on the blueline this season. “I’m just trying to do my best job, work hard every day, and make myself better.”

He mentioned he feels “ready” to play in the NHL. “Every chance I will get, I will try to prove that I earned it,” Fehervary said. He made his NHL debut on October 2, 2019, in the 3-2 overtime win over the St. Louis Blues. Fehervary added that he feels “stronger and smarter” after having the chance and experience. “I think I still can improve in every way, especially in the offensive way,” Fehervary said.

Fehervary called fellow defenseman and countryman Zdeno Chara a “legend just up there in Slovakia”. The 21-year-old was a “big fan” of Chara growing up and is looking forward to learning a lot from the 43-year-old. Fehervary said it’s an “unbelievable opportunity” to have Chara on the team, adding, “It’s really nice to have Zdeno here and I’m really excited.”

During the long offseason, Fehervary enjoyed the downtime to chill and relax, but also go fishing. “I love to spend time fishing,” he said, adding, he mostly catches carps, large fish native to Europe.

Marty was easily the brightest spot in the scrimmages. I’m hoping this kid sees a ton of ice time.
