Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Zdeno Chara Score In Final Intra-squad Scrimmage: Team White Beats Team Red, 3-1

The Washington Capitals held their second and final intra-squad scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The Capitals will now make roster cuts early this week in order to meet the 23-player roster limit required by 5:00 PM on Tuesday. Teams will also be able to field a 4 to 6 player taxi squad. The Capitals season begins Thursday night in Buffalo.

The Capitals training camp roster was divided into two teams for the second scrimmage, Team Red and Team White. The scrimmage consisted of two 20-minute periods.

ROSTERS
The rosters for the second scrimmage:

FIRST PERIOD
Not a lot of scoring chances early in this one. Craig Anderson replaced Vitek Vanecek in goal for Team White with 5:17 remaining in the first period.

Mike Sgarbossa would leave the game and head for the room with a trainer with 3:20 remaining in the period, and did not return.

Nic Dowd would get one of the games first scoring chances late in the period.

Garrett Pilon would also get a nice scoring chance late in the period, but the shot was stopped by Anderson.

The first period would go scoreless.

SECOND PERIOD
Samsonov and Anderson began the final period in goal.

Martin Fehervary generated a nice scoring chance early in the final frame with a block and chase, also demonstrating his speed.

Zdeno Chara would start the scoring with a long shot from the point, beating Samsonov early in the final frame.

Evgeny Kuznetsov would tie the game on a break away chance midway through the period, blistering one past Copley.

Team White would take a 2-1 lead midway through the period. It’s difficult to tell who got credit for this score.

The Captain would stretch Team White’s lead to 3-1 late in the period.

Nicklas Backstrom would provide the primary assist.

And that was the final. Team White Beats Team Red 2-1. Ilya Samsonov gave up three goals in the contest.
