Capitals Enter 2020-21 Season With NHL’s Oldest Roster

According to CapFriendly, the Washington Capitals enter the 2020-21 season with the NHL’s oldest roster as their players have an average age of 29.7, 1.1 more than the second-oldest (the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings), after signing 43-year-old defenseman Zdeno Chara to a one-year contract on Wednesday. The Red Wings finished in last place in the NHL standings by 23 points last season.

The Capitals’ roster could get even older if 39-year-old goaltender Craig Anderson, who signed a professional tryout agreement with the team on Sunday, signs with them. If Anderson does, the Capitals will enter the season with an average age of nearly 30.5.

The Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning, the two defending Stanley Cup Finalists, enter the season with an average age of 28.2 (sixth-oldest) and 28 (tied for seventh), respectively.

The Boston Bruins have the next oldest team in the division with an average age of 27.9. The New York Islanders follow at 27.8. The Pittsburgh Penguins have the fourth-oldest at 27.9, which is also the league average. Then come the Philadelphia Flyers (26.8; tied for eighth-youngest in NHL), Buffalo Sabres (26.7; seventh), New Jersey Devils (26.1; third), and New York Rangers (25; youngest).

You can see where all the teams rank below:

Last October the Capitals had the 10th oldest team in the league, with an average age of 27.9 years entering the 2019-20 season.

The average age of an NHL player was 27.3 years old.

In the “How to make me feel old” department. That’s the approximate age of my last born. Specifically, she was born 3 days after Dmitry Orlov’s wife, Varvara. And April 17th was actually her due date.

This is overrated stat only alarmists&paranoid people worry about. Because here are the facts in any of the big 4(NFL,MLB,NBA,NHL) you are either in 2 categories as a franchise/organization, 1, Rebuild/constantly sucking or 2 Winning organization/ battling for championships(Stanley Cups etc).
If you are a organization in category 2 you likely have A. drafted HOF Caliber players which are your franchise Icons. IE(Brady played 20 yrs in NE, Kobe 20 in La, Jeter Yankees, OV will do same here) point being HOF players whether 25,35,45 it doesnt matter when they produce. Secondly you have other veterans the pull the age up too late the Orpiks, newly signed Big Z etc

The alternative however is being a rebuilding team like the Redwings or Wizards in another sport loaded with young players and 1 or 2 stars but everyone knows before season starts they arent winning.

So the age stat is overrated, its all bout team construction

Good thing you aren’t a GM. Age absolutely is a factor over the course of the season. You may be new to the sport, but hockey is a physically demanding sport. Now we have a compressed schedule which will amplify things this season.

This is a ignorant and soft answer. Because I know age is minimal to 0 factor I some how must be new to the sport? No actually I know hockey pretty dang well just like all the main sports I grew up on.
But I’m not going to listen to analytics guy or “Hockey guy” try and tell me age matters when I can point out Tom Brady, Drew Brees both mid 40s Qbs still playing in the NFL collision sport even more so then Hockey, hardest position in sports. Oh and NFL just went through pendemic too. NBA doing the same, MLB too. I can name Lebrons, and Nax Scherzers or Kershawa.. other HOFrs that are in there 30s or 40s.. still producing. Age doesn’t matter.. when you are great. Especially now days when Ovs, Lebrons, Brady types have Hyperbaric chambers, and all the blood transfusions, Stem cells treatments, etc to keep them young&in their primes.
