Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre Do Battle In First Team Canada U20 Scrimmage

It was the inaugural battle of recent Capitals’ first round draft picks on Saturday night at the Westerner Park Centrum in Red Deer, Alberta. This year’s first round draft pick Hendrix Lapierre faced last year’s first round draft pick Connor McMichael in the first scrimmage of Team Canada’s U20 selection camp.

McMichael started at left wing on the top line for Team White and Lapierre centered the 4th line for Team Red.

Team White would break the seal with a power play goal late in the first frame. Gage Goncalves would finish the rebound in front on the power play. Bowen Byram with the initial blast.

The first period would end with Team White leading 1-0. Team White outshot Team Red 12-7 for the first 20 minutes.

Team White would stretch their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal from Dylan Cozins early in the middle frame.

Team White would stretch their lead to 3-0 with a goal from Philip Tomasino, who went five-hole off of the faceoff.

Team Red would get on the scoreboard with a goal from Justin Barron to make it 3-1. The goal was assisted by Jacob Pelletier.

The second period would end with Team White leading 3-1. Team Red outshot Team White 10-9 in the second period, with Team White leading 21-17 after two periods.

Team White would stretch their lead to 4-1 early in the final frame with a goal from Connor McMichael to make it 4-1.

Team Red would answer at the midway point of the period. Cole Perfetti would launch a bomb from the point, going through traffic, which Pelletier redirected for the score, making it 4-2.

Team White would hang on for the 4-2 win. White finished with a 27-25 edge in shots on goal, although Red had a 18-15 advantage over the final two periods.

The two teams will do battle again on Sunday and one final time on Tuesday before Team Canada begins exhibition games against Canadian college teams.
