Washington Capitals forward prospect Alexei Protas (Dinamo Minsk) was named KHL Rookie of the Week on Monday. Protas, who won three of three away games with his team last week, scoring 3 (1+2) points, scored his fifth goal of the season, setting a new franchise record for Dinamo Minsk for most goals in a season by a 19-year-old.
Protas scored his fifth career KHL goal on Wednesday against Sibir. The tally set a Dinamo Minsk franchise record for most goals by a 19-year-old in a single season. The tally came at 10:40 of the first period. Protas would redirect a shot from the left point for the score.
Yegor Sharangovich, who in the 2017/18 season scored four goals in 47 games, had the record. Protas recorded four goals in just 14 games and set the new franchise record in just 22 games.
After dwindling minutes and a healthy scratch on November 1, Protas returned with a very strong game against Sibir on November 11. As a result, Protas was elevated from 3C to 1C the following game against Barys on November 15. The top line would score 3 of the 4 goals in Dinamo’s 4-1 win over Barys. Protas had two assists in the game.
Protas has five goals and three assists in 23 games so far this season. He was asked about the team’s latest surge on the road following the Barys game.
“I agree, we recovered. The pause was good for us. In general, we seriously tune in to every game, fight in every game, which gives results on the road. We will try to make sure that there are more victories at home. We want to please our fans. Hence such an attitude.”
The Capitals announced on August 7 that the 6’6” Centerman is being loaned to Dinamo Minsk until training camp opens for the Capitals.

Hell, why not just extend the load for a full season? Hard to see what benefit he’d get out of going to Hershey if he’s getting that much ice time a Minsk? And, besides, he can join the protests against Lukashenko…
It’s starting to look like that might be the best plan, Yogi. He’s too young for Hershey, so he would return to WHL (Prince Albert Raiders), but he’s really benefiting from time in KHL.
