Thursday morning, Washington Capitals head coach Todd Reirden spoke to the media on a Zoom call prior to the team’s second round-robin game against the Philadelphia Flyers (4 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington, NBCSN). He said defenseman John Carlson will be a game-time decision tonight. Center Travis Boyd will draw into the lineup after Lars Eller left the Toronto bubble yesterday for the birth of his second child.

Carlson did receive more treatment this morning. Reirden said it would “great” for him to play a game in the round-robin, but they are not risking the chance to make the injury worse. “He’s too important to our team.”

Since Eller returned to Washington on Wednesday, Boyd will replace him on the third line. According to the league’s health and safety protocols, Eller must quarantine upon his return to the team until he can produce at least four consecutive negative tests over a four-day period.

Additionally, goaltender Braden Holtby will get the start against the Flyers.
