Capitals’ Vitek Vanecek: “[I’m] So Happy I Can Be With This Organization”

On Wednesday afternoon, Washington Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek spoke to the media on a Zoom call following practice on the eighth day of training camp.

He has no word yet on who will likely be Braden Holtby‘s backup when play resumes soon. Vancek reiterated how important it will be to stay ready and prepared if a situation arises.

The 24-year old Czech expressed how it’s a “great” feeling being a part of the Capitals’ quest for a second Stanley Cup. “[I’m] so happy I can be with this organization,” Vanecek said. He noted that it is a “tough situation” given current circumstances. “We will see what happens.”

During the four-month stoppage, Vanecek spent time in the Czech Republic. He mentioned having some opportunities to get on the ice a few times. Vanecek worked with his goalie coach once a week. Midway through week two of training camp, Vanecek said he is “feeling pretty good”.

On fellow Hershey Bears‘ teammate Alexander Alexeyev, Vanecek said he is a “pretty good defenseman”, who has improved so much with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate.
