As 36 states in the U.S. have seen coronavirus cases go up, all signs are pointing towards both of the hub cities to host the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs will be in Canada, according to Sportsnet’s John Shannon.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie said at the beginning of the day Tuesday that Las Vegas, Chicago, Edmonton, and Toronto were the final four possibilities to host games for the rest of the season. If Shannon’s report is correct, that would make Edmonton and Toronto the two hub cities.

Vancouver was eliminated as a hub city on Thursday after Dr. Bonnie Henry told the media that a positive coronavirus test from an NHL player, coach, executive, or staff member would likely result in a pause of play in the bubble despite British Columbia having disciplined coronavirus numbers.

COVID-19 cases in Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas) have skyrocketed to 14,607, making up 81.6% of the cases in the state. On Monday, Illinois reported 738 new cases.

In March, Toronto canceled all major events in the city through Tuesday.

As of Monday, there were 668 coronavirus cases in Canada with 257 new ones in Ontario and just 71 in Alberta.

Edmonton will likely host the Western Conference teams while Toronto will likely get the Eastern Conference ones.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs are reportedly set to begin Thursday, July 30 with 24 teams. There could be three games played per day.

The NHL and players association are currently working through the health protocols, a possible CBA extension, and other issues before making an official announcement.
