Martin Fehervary: “Trophy Fish Should Not End Up On A Baking Tray”

Work first, then fun! Martin Fehérváry (20), a talented defender of the Washington Capitals, adheres to this motto. Fehervary sat with Slovak media outlet Novy CAS this week to discuss his favorite hobby, fishing. The following is a translation of portions of the interview.

The hockey team has been preparing hard for several days for the upcoming NHL restart, where there is a real chance that Washington will call him to the team.  He also revealed his biggest hobby to the daily Nový Čas in an interview.

What stage of preparation are you in front of the upcoming NHL restart?

“I mainly try to keep fit. I go to the gym every day, where I have strength training, and I also have ice three times a week.“

You’ve played six games for Washington this season, and spent the rest of the season in Hershey. Is there a chance the club will call you to the team?

“I talked to the Washington leadership and they told me they were counting on me as a backup”

When should you report overseas?

“The information is that the preparatory camps are to be launched on 10 July and the matches themselves after a few weeks.”

Are you also waiting for quarantine?

“I don’t know exactly yet, but I’d like to avoid it.”

Your big hobby is fishing. How long have you been doing this hobby?

“As a little boy, I used to go fishing with my father in Záhorie. In recent years, I have returned to this hobby and now I spend a lot of time with a fishing rod in hand. I have my car, so whenever I feel like it, I go to the water and I go fishing all night.”

Do you take it as relaxation after hard matches or training?

“Yes, I can turn off from hockey or other things. Even now, when I train every day, staying by the lake is good relaxation. However, I only catch fish in Slovakia, so it’s always after the season.“

Do you also study some fishing books, do you look at various documents to improve your hobby?

“Of course, I try to read a lot and I also talk to many good fishermen. But not everyone reveals everything. Fishing is such a more private activity, and I also like that.”

Many fishermen catch just for fun and then release their catches back into the water. How are you?

“I am in favor of sport fishing, so I release everything I catch back into the water. Trophy fish should not end up on a baking tray. However, I always take pictures as a souvenir with nice catches. The last time I managed to catch a beautiful carp a few days ago. I specialize in catching carp, the largest was 16 kilograms so far.”
