Capitals top defensive prospect Martin Fehervary is preparing for the resumption of the 2019-2020 NHL season. In an interview with SME Sport on Friday, he confirmed he will be reporting to Washington as the seventh or eighth defenseman when players convene for training camp prior to the 2020 playoffs. Fehervary also discussed his training preparations in advance of the upcoming training camp.
On Wednesday, you played a game against hockey players including Michal Tchaikovsky, Martin Bakoš, Adam Ružiček and Filip Krivošík in Vrakun. Who won?
Yes, Adam Ružička called me and asked if I would come play with them, they needed to win. So I said yes.
Playing against famous hockey players can be good motivation. Didn’t your opponents try to excel even more?
After the first five minutes, we led 5 – 1. It was a quick process. It was a regular game with a referee. However, we took each other into account. This was not a competition. However, the match had a good pace, there were also some fights.
How are you preparing during this period?
I have been preparing with the boys at Aircraft Sport House for five years now. I’m at home there. I train there four times a week. I’m on the ice three times a week and sometimes I wrestle. I try to keep it varied so that I do other sports as well. When I’m free, I go fishing.
It is known that Zdeno Chára often wrestles in the summer. Is it possible to prepare for some battles that may await you in the NHL?
I have friends who are wrestlers with whom I go to Senec. Above all, it’s great for explosiveness, strength and coordination. It’s a challenging sport and I really appreciate wrestlers. When I stand against the professionals, I have no chance and they will really beat me. My only job is to stay on my feet.
Many people complain that gyms are closed. Do you miss them too, or can you replace them with other exercises?
When we train outside, I have various aids that help us. However, a classic gym will not completely be replaced. I miss various dumbbells and weights.
You talk about training with great enthusiasm. How much time do you devote to training a day?
I love hard workouts and hard work. It also depends on my day. For example, on Wednesday I was on the ice for an hour, then in the gym for an hour and a half, and finally for an hour and a half I played hockey. I like it when I can move. I’m an athlete.
Some people complain that they gained a few pounds during a pandemic. Didn’t you have to limit yourself in food?
I just lost a lot of weight when I started training. I have never had a problem with food. I lost a few percent of my fat and gained muscle mass. I feel great right now.
Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has seven percent fat in his body. What are your values?
They recently measured 5.3 percent fat on me. Each device is a little different. However, I have never had a lot of fat on my body.
The best athletes are also known for their strict lifestyle. Do you ever break it during the preparation period?
During the week, I focus on training and follow a balanced diet to be as well prepared as possible. When I have time, my friends and I go for lemonade. Sometimes I indulge in a beer. However, I try to avoid big events or discos.
NHL management has announced that the season could be completed in two cities in a playoff format featuring 24 teams. How do you feel about it?
It’s nice if the season starts. However, many players are at home. They have not been on the ice for two months and it will be difficult to get into it. Even playing without spectators will be weird. I’m not excited about it.
Does that mean you would rather the season be canceled and you could calmly prepare for the next one?
I’d rather they ended it. I don’t know how they want to put it all together. I’m not the one who should determine something. When they call me from the club (Washington Capitals, editor’s note), I’ll do my best to play more NHL games.
Most of the season you were in Hershey, for which you played 56 games. Have you been contacted by Washington or are they counting on you in the event of an NHL restart?
Yes, they called me and when the camp starts, I will go to Washington. I will be in reserve as the seventh or eighth defender. Next week I am going to Prague, where I will meet Jakub Vrána, with whom I will talk about it all.
In the current situation, it can be more difficult with transport to the USA. Have you spoke with anyone yet?
It is possible that we will rent a private plane with several boys. We also talked about it with Tomáš Tatar or Adam Ružiček , who is in Calgary’s farm system. I know several boys have already done so. We will see how it ends.
