The 2020 NHL Draft will happen in early June, according to an NHL front office manager. The announcement could come as early as Monday or Tuesday, at the latest.
The draft was postponed, along with the NHL Awards in Las Vegas and the NHL Scouting Combine, in March due to the uncertainty of the remainder of the 2019-20 season. The season paused on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic with all teams having somewhere between 11-14 games remaining in the regular season.
The 2020 NHL Draft was slated to take place at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec June 26-27. Montreal will get to host the 2021 NHL Draft or the 2022 NHL Draft. The event could go to the NHL Seattle franchise after the 2020-21 season to correspond with the NHL Expansion Draft.
The NFL held their draft this year online and had success with it, prompting the NHL to look at the format more closely. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Freidman reported on NHL Network last week that this year’s draft will take place electronically.
The NHL still needs to figure some things out before the draft is held like order and the fate of conditional picks dealt in trades that were dependent on a team’s fate this season. Expect that and more information to come in this week’s announcement.
The Detroit Red Wings already secured last place in the NHL before the season paused, giving them the best odds at winning the NHL Draft Lottery.
