The Washington Capitals’ players compiled a number of individual milestones throughout the 2019-20 season (currently on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic), both on and off the ice. Some of the more notable milestones came in the form of new family members. The Capitals’ 2019-20 season (for this piece including the prior summer), saw several of the Caps’ players welcome new babies into the fold. In a time of much hardship, NoVa Caps takes a look back at some of the bright spots this season.
The summer of 2019 saw the births of sons to two of the Capital’ star Russian players. Evgeny Kuznetsov’s wife, Anastasia, gave birth to their second child and first son, Fedor, on June 3, joining daughter Ecenia.
On June 29, defenseman Dmitry Orlov’s wife Varvera, gave birth to the couple’s first child and son, Kirill Dmitrivich.
Preseason and Early Season Baby Boom
The summer prior to the start of the 2019-20 season saw several new players join the Capitals’ roster, includng defenseman Radko Gudas, who was acquired in a trade, and forward Richard Panik, who was signed in free agency; both players’ spouses were expecting. In late September, Gudas’ wife went into labor and the new Capitals’ blueliner flew home to be with her. She gave birth to their third child, a girl named Elvira, joining son Kvido, and eldest daughter Leontynka.

Richard Panik’s wife delivered their second child in late October. He and his wife already had a daughter, Lilien. No further information could be found on Panik’s baby.
Nic Dowd and Nick Jensen
The Capitals signed center Nic Dowd in free agency during the summer of 2018. At the trade deadline in 2019, the Caps acquired Dowd’s former college teammate, defenseman Nick Jensen in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. It was soon announced by Nic and wife Paige, and Nick and wife Jenner, that each couple were expecting their first child.
Dowd reported to the morning skate on New Year’s Eve but soon got word that Paige was in labor, although the baby had been expected to arrive a month later. By the end of the evening, Nic and Paige were the proud parents of a baby boy named Louie, who weighed in at 5 lbs 6 oz.
Jensen’s baby would not arrive for more than two months.
March of the Babies
Less than a week after the coronavirus caused the NHL and other sports leagues to pause their schedule, the arrival of two more Capitals babies provided some good news in troubling times. Right Wing T.J. Oshie and wife Lauren welcomed the couple’s third child and first son, Campbell Richard Oshie on March 16, joining older sisters Lyla and Leni. The very next day Jenner Jensen gave birth to a baby boy, Lorenzo Luck Jensen. Both baby boys were born in the same hospital and were photographed together.
Campbell Oshie and Lorenzo Jensen were not the last babies born into the Capitals family in March. Center Nicklas Backstrom’s fiancée, Liza Berg, gave birth to the couple’s third child on March 30, a girl named Alizee, joining older daughter Hailey, and son Vincent.
Former Washington Capitals
Several former Capitals players also welcomed new family members this season.
Former Caps defenseman Mike Green and his wife, Courtney, became parents of a baby girl named Lula on November 16, 2019. She was their second child and first girl, joining older brother Axel Rain.
Nathan Walker and his wife Tayla, welcomes their first child, a daughter, Winta Dash on February 15, 2020. She weighed in at 6.8 lbs.
Former Capitals and current Buffalo Sabres forward Marcus Johansson, became the father of a baby girl Elize on April 29. She was the second daughter born to Marcus and his wife, Amelia. They already had a four/year old daughter, Mila.
This list will not be the end of the baby boom for the Capitals this season, as Alex Ovechkin and wife Nastya are expecting their second son to arrive soon.
