Last week, we brought you the story of two nurses, one a Washington Capitals fan and one a Philadelphia Flyers fan, making masks for D.C. first responders in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. I had the chance to speak with Vanessa, a local oncology nurse, who is helping to protect her colleagues and patients by making homemade masks all in D.C. sports style.

“I had completely forgotten that I had D.C. team fabric at home until I saw the NoVa Caps post about the Caps-Flyers masks,” Vanessa said. In addition to Capitals fabric, she purchased Redskins, Nationals, and even Washington Bullets fabric for masks. Vanessa improvised by using hair ties to make ear loops since most fabric stores are sold out of elastic. “I settled on this mask template after attempting different styles,” she added.

As I mentioned, Vanessa is a nurse working in oncology at a local hospital. She is making masks for her colleagues and patients to help protect and prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. Vanessa said, “Some of my patients come from treatment five days a week for 4-6 weeks and they are always looking for ways to protect themselves since they are immunocompromised.”

She likes to wear something D.C. sports-related at work. Vanessa said her ID lanyard changes based on the sports season. “My patients and colleagues know I’m a huge D.C. sports fan, so it’s fitting that I’m making these masks D.C.-themed.”

It’s been “tough” for Vanessa to make masks as she finishing up her graduate school program next week, but makes some time in between work and school. “I’m planning on ramping up production after I give my final school presentation next Monday,” Vanessa concluded.
