Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 48th goal of the season Monday night as the team clashed with the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center. The goal has tied him for first in the NHL. Ovechkin is also three goals shy of passing Mike Gartner (708) for the seventh-most goals in league history.
Just seconds after the faceoff draw, Ovechkin cut the Sabres’ lead by half at the 3:33 mark of the final frame, scoring his 48th goal thus far and tying him for first in the NHL with Boston Bruins’ center David Pastrňák. Center Evgeny Kuznetsov assisted.

Ovechkin is only three goals shy of passing Mike Gartner (708) for the seventh-most goals in league history. Additionally, he is two goals away from reaching the 50-goal plateau, which would mark the ninth time in his career, joining Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy as the only players in NHL history with the accomplishment.

The Great Eight has scored 50.8% of his career regular-season goals on the road (359 of 706). It is the highest percentage among the NHL’s eight members of the 700-goal club.
Ovechkin has scored 359 career regular-season goals on the road (359 goals in 576 games), trailing only Wayne Gretzky (402) and Steve Yzerman (362).

Wow, wow wow!!! Oh, we lost again , didn’t we? My only hope is that the players and the management aren’t for one minute impressed or distracted by these seemingly endless observances of the career milestones for one player or another. If we don’t figure out how to be more competitive against the teams we play (ANY of the teams we play) we will be first round canon fodder again – just like in the old days. Makes me think that the only real mistake GMBM has made in his years here has been letting Trotz walk.
