The Washington Capitals announced on Saturday morning that they have recalled defenseman Martin Fehervary from the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

The 20-year old did not dress in the Bears’ 3-0 win over the Wilkes-Barrie Scranton Penguins on Friday night as the Capitals likely did not want to risk him getting hurt before recalling him.

He was called up earlier this week so the Capitals could see where he is at in his development and played 19:55 worth of ice time in the team’s4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Fehervary impressed with a takeaway, a giveaway, two blocked shots, four hits, a shot, and a +2 rating. Head coach Todd Reirden said after the game that his performance warranted another game. He has been held scoreless in four NHL games this season.

Fehervary has recorded four goals, 14 points, and a +12 rating in 45 games with the Bears this season. He was drafted 46th overall by the Capitals in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Jonas Siegenthaler was scratched against the Kings in favor of Fehervary.

The Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington).

From The Capitals

The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Martin Fehervary from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Fehervary, 20, has appeared in four games with the Capitals this season. The 6’2″, 200-pound rookie defenseman has averaged 15:51 TOI per game and has recorded a 54.10 shot attempt percentage (52 shot attempts for, 44 against) at five-on-five.

Fehervary, who was selected with the Capitals’ second round pick, 46th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut on Oct. 2 against the St. Louis Blues and became the first player selected outside of the first round to make his NHL debut before the age of 20 since Samuel Girard (Nashville, selected in the second round, 47th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft) on Oct. 10, 2017. The Bratislava, Slovakia, native is one of 11 defensemen in franchise history to make his NHL debut before the age of 20.

In 45 games with Hershey this season, Fehervary has 14 points (4g, 10a). Among rookie AHL defensemen, Fehervary’s 10 assists are tied for 18th and his +12 plus/minus ranks fifth.

Fehervary registered seven points (1g, 6a) for HV-71 in the Swedish Hockey League in 45 games during the 2018-2019 season. He captained Team Slovakia during the World Junior Championship, recording five points (1g, 4a) in five games. Additionally, Fehervary represented Slovakia during the 2019 IIHF World Championship, recording an assist in seven games.
