After scoring two goals in the first period of the Capitals’ Thursday night victory against the New Jersey Devils to reach his 15th consecutive 30-goal season, Alex Ovechkin needed to light the lamp once more to complete the hat trick. The 34-year old captain did just that in the final minutes of the third period on a beautiful feed from linemate Tom Wilson.
The future Hall of Famer’s third goal of the game came at the 15:42 mark of the final frame, with John Carlson and Wilson picking up the assists. Wilson’s feed, however, was a thing of beauty.

The hat trick was the 25th of The Great Eight’s 15-season NHL career, and tied him with Cy Denneny for ninth all-time in NHL history in three-goal performances. The goal also marked his second of the season.

The goal draws the Capitals’ captain two goals shy of passing Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux to take possession of 10th on the all-time Goals Scored list.

To think 75 of his career goals came in just 25 games is also a bit of a mind bender.

Another ‘thanks for the memories’ moment for tht GREAT8. By the way – Big John Walton – I heard him this morning on the NHL network calling the replays for the Wild game. Was he calling our game last night on the radio or was it someone else? What’s that all about?
I believe he was working nationally for NBCSN. He’s been trying for the national gig for a few years now.
