Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL in regular-season and Stanley Cup Playoff goals combined vs. a single team against nine different franchises, the most in the league, this decade. (Data provided by hockey-reference.com)
For the decade, Ovechkin leads the league in goals against:
- Columbus Blue Jackets (19),
- Montreal Canadiens (27),
- New York Rangers (33),
- Pittsburgh Penguins (32),
- Tampa Bay Lightning (34), and
- Toronto Maple Leafs (30).
The 34-year old co-leads against the Buffalo Sabres with Philadelphia Flyers forward James Van Riemsdyk and Maple Leafs center John Tavares (21), Carolina Hurricanes with Tavares (26), and New Jersey Devils (20) with Lightning center Steven Stamkos.
After Ovechkin, Patrick Kane has the most goals against six teams, Steven Stamkos and Sidney Crosby have the most goals against four teams and Logan Couture has the most goals against three teams.
It is impressive that Ovechkin has been able to not only lead but sits all alone in first against the Blue Jackets as they were in the Western Conference through 2013. The Canadiens, Maple Leafs, and Sabres were never been in the same division as the Capitals this decade. Though, the Capitals have played both the Maple Leafs (2017 first-round) and Canadiens (2010 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals) in a Stanley Cup Playoff series before.
Penguins center Sidney Crosby (21) leads the NHL in goals against the Capitals this decade.
