With the Washington Capitals‘ 2-1 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night, goaltender Ilya Samsonov became the quickest rookie goaltender in franchise history to win 10 games, accomplishing the feat in just 12 starts and 14 appearances. He made 27 saves in the victory.

With his 12th start of the season, Ilya Samsonov earned his 10th win, the least amount of starts in franchise history a rookie has taken to earn 10 wins.

The 22-year old has not lost a game since November 15 and he is 10-2-1 with a .918 save percentage, which ranks third among rookie netminders, and a 2.28 goals-against average, which is second only behind Chris Driedger of the Florida Panthers (1.69). He is currently second among rookie goaltenders in wins this season, behind only MacKenzie Blackwood of the New Jersey Devils, who has played 14 more games than Samsonov this season.

Samsonov told the media after the game that his mother was in attendance for the first time in his NHL career.

Among rookie goaltenders with at least four games played, Samsonov ranks first in points percentage (.807). Additionally, Samsonov ranks seventh in wins by a rookie Russian-born goaltender in NHL history. He currently has the second-lowest goals-against average among a Russian rookie goaltender with at least 10 games (Nabokov: 2.19 GAA) and has the highest save percentage.
