The Washington Capitals are back in action tonight after the Christmas break to host the Columbus Blue Jackets (7:00 P.M. ET on NBC Sports Washington). Here is the latest from Friday’s morning skate.

Capitals

Defenseman Christian Djoos has been recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears this morning. This comes after the Capitals announced defensemen, Michal Kempny and Radko Gudas, will be game-time decisions due to illness.

No changes are expected in the line combinations. Head coach Todd Reirden said going with only five defensemen is “not the plan”. This means that either Kempny or Gudas will be relatively cleared to play. Djoos does not know who he will be paired with but will play in tonight’s divisional matchup.

Goaltender Ilya Samsonov will be in net for Washington.

Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets have placed forward Cam Atkinson on injured reserve (lower body) is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. The team did an emergency recall from the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters: forwards Jakob Lilja and Ryan MacInnis and defensemen Gabriel Carlsson and Adam Clendening.

Defenseman Scott Harrington is out tonight also with an illness. The Blue Jackets now have a total of 10 players out of the lineup. Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo will start for Columbus.
