NHL Public Relations released some stats on coach’s challenges from around the league this season through Thursday, December 12 on Saturday. The challenge has become effective as most have changed the determination of goals that were initially called.
Of the 69 coach’s challenges, 37 calls got overturned. Though, only nine of the 23 challenges for goalie interference were upheld. Only one was initiated by the situation room and was upheld. There have been 34 offside challenges and 27 of those changed the ruling on the ice. The situation room reviewed four goals for offside but three of them got upheld. All of the six challenges for play stoppage in addition to one by the situation room were upheld.
The Washington Capitals have been mindful of when they have challenged a call on the ice this season as they have only challenged two. Four challenges were initiated against them.
Only six teams (Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Islanders, Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, San Jose Sharks) have had challenges that were initiated by the situation room occur this season.
The Capitals’ three challenges that changed the ruling from “goal” to “no goal” are tied for third in the league. Only the Boston Bruins (four) have more.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are the only team this season to have the ruling change from “no goal” to “goal” on a coach’s challenge.
