The Washington Capitals wrapped up their four-game road trip with their sixth straight win on Friday night at Honda Center, where they beat the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 3-2. It was only the second time they swept a four-game road trip in franchise history and first since February 1993. The Capitals now lead the New York Islanders by nine points for first place in the Metropolitan Division, though the Islanders have four games in hand on the Capitals. Goaltender Braden Holtby made 27 saves in the win.

Center Nicklas Backstrom (upper-body injury) missed his eighth straight game. The Capitals made no lineup changes up front or on defense from their 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday.

First Period

Center Travis Boyd one-timed a shot from the goal-line to finish a three-way passing play after forward Carl Hagelin fed him from behind the net, score his second of the season, and make it 1-0 Capitals nine minutes in.

The Ducks led 14-12 in shots, 10-9 in hits, 5-4 in blocked shots, and 2-1 in takeaways after one. They won 68% of the draws and had only one giveaway while the Capitals had six through 20 minutes,

Each team did not have a full power-play in the first.

Second Period

Center Evgeny Kuznetsov called his own number through the five-hole of goaltender Ryan Miller from the right dot after working his way down and getting a pass from defenseman John Carlson at the top 16 seconds into a power-play and 5:10 into the second to make it 2-0.

Ducks forward Sam Steel one-timed a shot from the low left circle after getting fed from the other dot by defenseman Brendan Guhle on the power-play but it was overturned on a coaches challenge by the Capitals, their first of the season, with 8:50 left in the period.

Center Ryan Getzlaf sniped a shot past Holtby’s blocker after he poked a rebound out in front with his stick out to Getzlaf, who cut the Capitals’ lead in half with 2:57 left in the second.

The Capitals led 27-22 in shots, including 15-8 in the second, and 6-5 in blocked shots through two. They went 1-for-3 on the power play in the first two periods.

The Ducks led 19-13 in hits, 5-1 in takeaways, and had eight giveaways while the Capitals had nine after 40. They won 73% of the draws and failed to convert on three power plays in the first two periods.

Third Period

Center Adam Henrique ripped one past Holtby’s shoulder from the right dot after getting fed by Getzlaf along the half wall to tie it for the Ducks 45 seconds into the third.

Forward Jakub Vrana stripped the puck from Guhle in the offensive zone and with Miller out of position, he was thwarted at first but buried the second opportunity to give the Capitals the lead back 52 seconds after Henrique tied it.

The Capitals led 36-29 in shots, including 9-7 in the third, and 12-5 in blocked shots. They went 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Ducks led 27-21 in hits and 6-5 in takeaways. They won 64% of the draws and failed to convert on three power plays.

Each team gave away the puck 11 times.

The Capitals swept the California trip for the first time in franchise history.
