Capitals defenseman John Carlson’s start to the 2019-20 season has seen the former first-round pick have one incredible game after the other. After scoring a goal in the Caps’ 5-2 routing of the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, Carlson netted his 10th and 11th goals of the season on Wednesday’s late-night tilt against the Los Angeles Kings.

Carlson’s 10th goal came just 4:36 into the opening frame at Staples Center, with Carlson firing a dart past Kings netminder Jonathan Quick, unassisted.

The goal was the 100th of Carlson’s Capitals/NHL career, making him just the fifth blueliner in franchise history to reach the century mark in goals, joining Kevin Hatcher (149), Sergei Gonchar (144), Calle Johansson (113), and Mike Green (113). The first tally also gave him the most points by a defenseman (41) in his team’s first 30 games since Paul Coffey recorded 41 in the early 1990’s with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Carlson’s second tally was a beauty against Quick, and exemplified the start the Caps’ top rearguard has had to the season. The goal was assisted by T.J. Oshie and Lars Eller.

Carlson’s two goals bring him within 30 points of surpassing Johansson as the highest-scoring defenseman in the history of the franchise. Carlson’s 42nd point of the season also put him in rare company:
