Capitals Thump Sharks 5-2, Win 20th Game Of The Season; Jakub Vrana and Garnet Hathaway Score Two Goals Each

The Washington Capitals thumped the San Jose Sharks 5-2 Tuesday night at SAP Center in San Jose, California. After giving up the game’s first goal, the Capitals responded with five unanswered goals before the Sharks could answer late in the third period. The win improves the Capitals’ record to 20-4-5 (45 points). The Capitals are back in action on Wednesday when they visit the Los Angeles Kings in Southern California. Puck drop is set for 10:00 PM.

The Sharks would pot the game’s first goal just 2:33 into the contest, but the Capitals would answer with goals from Garnet Hathaway, Jakub Vrana and John Carlson to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Garnet Hathaway would score his second goal of the game less than three minutes in the middle frame and Jakub Vrana would add his second goal of the night late in the middle frame for a 5-1 lead after two periods. The Sharks would pot their second goal of the game late in the final frame for the 5-2 final.


Braden Holtby (14-2-0-4, 2.86 GAA, .909 sv%) started between the pipes for the visiting  Capitals. Martin Jones (12-8-0-1, 3.03 GAA, .896 sv%) got the start in goal for the Sharks. The Capitals starting forward lines and defensive pairs:

Scratches: Nicklas Backstrom (upper body injury). Chandler Stephenson was traded to the Vegas Knights on Monday in exchange for their 5th round draft pick in 2021.

The Sharks wasted little time in grabbing the game’s first lead with a breakaway goal from Melker Karlsson at 2:33 of the first. It was Karlsson’s third goal of the season.

The Capitals would tie the game up midway through the opening frame with a goal from Garnet Hathaway (3) at 13:31 of the first period. John Carlson (30) and Nic Dowd (3) had the helpers.

Less the a minute later the Capitals would take their first lead of the game with a goal from Jakub Vrana (13) at 14:24 of the first period. John Carlson (31) and TJ Oshie (10) had the assists.

Moments later the Capitals would stretch their lead to 3-1 with a goal from John Carlson (9) at 16:32 of the opening frame. Michal Kempny (9) had the primary assist.

The first period would come to a close with the Capitals leading 3-1. The Capitals led in shots on goal 13-10 for the first frame. The Capitals gained control of possession at the 7 minute mark and owned if for the remainder of the period.

The Capitals Would quickly make it 4-1 with Garnet Hathaway’s second tally of the night at 2:31 of the middle frame. Nic Dowd (4) had the lone assist.

The Capitals would make it 5-1 with Jakub Vrana’s second goal of the night at 16:15 of the middle frame. Lars Eller (9) and Dmitry Orlov (9) had the helpers.

The Capitals led 5-1 after two period. The Capitals led in shots on goal 10-7 for the middle frame, and 23-27 after two periods. The Capitals out-attempted the Sharks 15-14 for the middle frame, and 38-32 after two periods. Washington was 0 for 1 on the power play after two periods. San Jose did not have a man advantage in the first two periods of play.

Aaron Dell came in to relieve Martin Jones for the Sharks to start the third period. The Sharks would cut the Capitals lead to 5-2 with a goal from Evander Kane at 13:07 of the final frame.

That would be the final.


  • For the first time this season, the Capitals were not penalized in a game.
  • John Carlson had three points in the first period. (1g, 2a).
  • John Carlson of the @Capitals is the first defenseman to reach the 40-point mark in 29 or fewer games since Calgary’s Al MacInnis in 1990-91 (11-30—41 in 29 GP).
  • With a three point night, Carlson now has six three-point games this season. That’s twice as many as Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes, who ranks second among defensemen in three-point games. Only 10 defensemen other than Carlson have at least two.
  • Jakub Vrana scored his second goal of the game to give the Caps a 5-1 lead. It’s the fourth time this season the Capitals have had two multi-goal scorers in the same game (Nov. 7 vs. Florida; Oct. 29 vs. Toronto: Oct. 25 vs. Vancouver).
  • All 14 of Jakub Vrana’s goals this season have come at even strength, which is the third-most in the NHL (Leon Draisaitl and Brad Marchand: 15).
  • Garnet Hathaway has recorded his second career multi-goal game and first as a Capital (Oct. 21 at New York Rangers as a member of the Calgary Flames).
  • The Capitals’ 106 goals this season lead the NHL, and they scored 106 goals in their first 29 games for the 10th time in franchise history and for the second-straight season.
  • With a 20-4-5 record, the Capitals recorded their 20th win in their 29th game of the season for the third time in franchise history (2015-16: 21 wins in 29 games; 1991-92: 20 wins in 29 games).
  • The Capitals improve to a 12-2-1 record on the road and 6-0-3 record against the Pacific Division.
