AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE (BEARS)
The Hershey Bears were besieged by road struggles in the month of November. The Bears played six road games in the month and lost all six. Four of those losses were by a single goal, including an overtime loss and a shootout loss, but the month started with an 8-1 drubbing in Springfield and finished with a 6-3 loss at Providence.
Overall, Hershey finished the month 4-6-1-2. They sit in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 21 points. The Bears were five points out of a playoff spot when November ended, after losing their last four games of the month.
Beset by call-ups and injuries, the Bears suffered through significant offensive woes at times in the month. They scored two goals or fewer in seven games in November and were shutout in back-to-back games on November 13 and 15.
The team has also struggled mightily on special teams. The Bears finished the month of November dead last in the AHL in power plays with a 9.3% efficiency.
Pheonix Copley – G – Undrafted – 27-years old.
November was an up-and-down month for Copley. He started the month by surrendering eight goals in an 8-1 loss at Springfield on November 1. The loss was hardly all on Copley, as it was a bad game for the entire team. He bounced back by making 18 saves and winning his next start against Syracuse on November 3. The North Pole, Alaska native made 29 saves and surrendered no goals during the run of play against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Unfortunately for Copley, the Bears did not score either and he lost the game in a shootout. He beat defending Calder Cup champion Charlotte, making 17 saves in a 2-1 win on November 16. Copley’s month ended the way it started, with a rough outing. He gave up six goals to Providence and lost 7-6 in a shootout. Again, the loss was not all on Copley, but the second Providence goal was on him. Providence had just scored to cut the Hershey lead to 3-1. 53 seconds later, Joona Koppanen shot from close to the goal line on the left wing. The shot got through Copley and it was a one-goal game. For the season, Copley is 5-5-4-1 with a 2.73 Goals-Against Average And an .894 Save Percentage.

Vitek Vanecek – G – Drafted Second-Round, 2014 NHL Entry Draft – 23-years old.
The Czech netminder spent part of November in the NHL serving as Braden Holtby’s backup in Washington as the Capitals navigated salary cap issues. In Hershey, Vanecek started five games. He earned the win on November 2 over Providence. He was the hard luck loser in a 2-1 loss at Hartford, making 25 stops. Vanecek struggled in a 6-3 loss to Providence on November 24, surrendering five goals on 32 shots. It was his first action since November 10 and the rust showed. He was undone by undisciplined play by Hershey in a 2-1 loss to Belleville on November 30 in his final start of the month. Vanecek looks to be finally settling in and pulling his game together after a very shaky start In October. For the season, Vanecek is 4-4-1-0 with a 2.84 Goals-Against Average and an .885 Save Percentage.
Trending: Up
Christian Djoos – D – Drafted Seventh-Round, 2012 NHL Entry Draft – 25-years old.
Djoos started November off with a bad game, being on the ice for four goals in an 8-1 loss at Springfield. He bounced back with a three-game assist streak. The Gothenburg, Sweden native added an assist on November 16 in 2-1 win over Charlotte, his final game for the Bears in the month. His 10 assists are tied for the team lead. Djoos was recalled to Washington on November 22. He did not seen any action in the NHL during his call up. Hershey surrendered 16 goals in the three games they played after Djoos was recalled. His absence was clearly been felt.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby – LW, RW – Drafted Fifth-Round, 2016 NHL Entry Draft – 21-years old.
After a hot start, Jonsson-Fjallby has cooled off offensively. He is currently on a nine-game point drought and has not scored a goal since November 1. The Stockholm, Sweden native is still contributing on the penalty kill and continues to play responsibly in his own zone. He is a plus-4, which is the best rating among Hershey forwards (and second on the team).
Trending: Down
Beck Malenstyn – LW, RW – Drafted Fifth-Round, 2016 NHL Entry Draft – 21-years old.
The second-year winger netted his third goal of the season on November 3 in a 4-2 Hershey win over the Syracuse Crunch. The second period tally was his first game-winning goal of the season. The Delta, British Columbia native added an assist for two points in nine games played for the month. Malenstyn teamed with Brian Pinho to form the top forward duo on the penalty kill. On November 20, Malenstyn received his first callup to the NHL and made his debut for the Washington Capitals against the New York Rangers that night. He played in three games for the Capitals, which included minutes on the penalty kill, before returning to Hershey. Malenstyn’s level of play with the Capitals opened the eyes of many not familiar with Malenstyn. Capitals Head Coach Reirden was impressed by Malenstyn during this fall’s training camp, which is often considered the golden key. Look for him to make a return trip to Washington at some point this season. In the meantime, he is sorely needed in Hershey, and will instantly improve the Bears’ penalty kill and shot blocking.
Trending: Up
Mike Sgarbossa – C – Undrafted – 27-years old.
Sgarbossa continues to be a very consistent player for the Bears. Since coming to Hershey, prior to last season, the pivot has produced every month he has played. November was no different. The Campbellville, Ontario native compiled 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 12 games played. Sgarbossa had three multi-point games in the month and five on the season. He leads the team in goals with eight, power-play goals with three and points with 18. He is tied for the team lead in assists with 10 and in game-winning goals with two. Sgarbossa earned his first call-up to Washington, giving him his first NHL action since 2016-17. He went scoreless in two games played for the Capitals.
Trending: Up
Alexander Alexeyev – D – Drafted First-Round, 2018 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old.
The rookie blueliner continues to impress offensively. He dished out four assists in November and is third on the team in that category with nine. He has good vision and has a knack for finding the open player. On the other end of the ice, the Russian defenseman has had his ups and many downs, which is to be expected with a young defenseman and there are times where his inexperience shows. In the third period on November 27 against Providence, Alexeyev was burned to the outside by Jakub Lauko after being caught flat-footed. He was a minus-6 for the month and needs to be more consistent in his own end. That will come with experience. On the flip side, Alexeyev finished the month of November leading all Bears rookies in points with nine.
Trending: Same
Martin Fehervary – D – Drafted Second-Round 2018 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old.
The young Slovak defenseman continues to play with the poise of a veteran. He plays under control and rarely panics. The Bratislava, Slovakia native makes good decisions in his own end. He leads the Bears in plus/minus with a plus-5 rating. Offensively, Fehervary’s three goals are the most for a Hershey rookie. He has also contributed six assists and is tied for fifth on the team in scoring. Fehervary plays in all situations and contributes on both the power play and penalty kill. Look for Fehervary to make a return trip to Washington as soon as the Capitals can afford to do so.
Trending: Up
Brian Pinho – C/RW – Drafted Sixth-Round 2013 NHL Entry Draft -24-years old.
Pinho’s offensive numbers dropped in November after a productive October. The month started well for the Providence College product. He had an assist in the first game of the month and then scored a goal in the second. He failed to record a point in his next nine games. The North Andover, Massachusetts native broke through with a goal against Providence on November 27 to stop his scoreless drought. Pinho is one of the team’s top penalty killers, but his play at even-strength has dropped, finishing as a minus-6 for the month, a bad number for a player who is usually a solid defensive forward. Pinho caught fire at the end of last season, and had a very good prospect tournament and training camp, and should find his offensive game soon.
Trending: Down
Brett Leason – RW – Drafted Second-Round 2019 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old.
The rookie winger has struggled to find his offensive game. Leason had not yet tallied his first goal of the season and only has two assists on the season and is on an eight-game scoreless drought. The Calgary, Alberta native’s frustration has to be building. To the rookie’s credit, he has not let his offensive woes affect his game in his own zone. He plays hard and has not been a minus player in nine games. Early in the second period against Providence on November 27, Leason blocked a shot from the left point. Brian Pinho scored shortly after his block to give Hershey a 2-0 lead.

Lucas Johansen – D – Drafted First-Round, 2016 NHL Entry Draft. – 22-years old.
November was a another lost month for Johansen. He missed the entire month with an undisclosed “lower-body injury.”
Trending: Same
Connor Hobbs – D – Drafted Fifth-Round, 2015 NHL Entry Draft – 22-years old.
Hobbs saw action in nine games in November. He did not score any points, but did make an impact in other ways. On November 10, the Bears were shorthanded late in overtime versus Lehigh Valley. Hobbs was shaken up on the play, but still managed to clear the puck out of the zone from his knees. The clearance sent Hershey to the shootout, which they won 1-0. Then, Hobbs delivered a big hit on Providence’s Trent Frederic in the first period on November 27. The Bears got a power play out of the ensuing scuffle. With Hershey’s numbers game on defense, Hobbs needs to find more consistency in his game and add a little more offense if he wants to get more playing time.

Philippe Maillet – C/RW – Undrafted – 27-years old.
Maillet is still struggling to adapt offensively to the Eastern Conference. He has six points in 21 games so far this season. Last season, he amassed 54 points in 68 games. To equal his point total from last season, the Montreal Quebec native needs to score 48 points in Hershey’s 54 remaining games. That may be a lot to ask. The Bears would be happy if the pivot would put up more than three points a month. The team needs Maillet’s secondary scoring if they are going to be successful this season. He needs to find a way to produce more offensively, and it needs to start in December.
Trending: Down
Garrett Pilon – C/RW – Drafted Third-Round, 2016 NHL Entry Draft – 21-years old.
The second-year pivot posted six points in the month to up his season total to nine. Three of those came in one game, a three-assist night against Providence on November 27. He was scoreless in eight of his other 11 games. The Mineola, New York native had a single goal and no assists through his first seven games of the month, but then had five points in his next four games. Pilon, like much of the team, needs to find more consistency offensively and limit his scoring droughts. We give him a “same” rating because there was a noticeable uptick in his offensive play in the last few games of the month. Pilon is talented and will eventually start scoring in bunches.
Trending: Same
Colby Williams – D – Drafted Sixth-Round, 2015 NHL Entry Draft – 24-years old.
Williams suited up for eight games in November, but only played in one of Hershey’s final four games of the month. He did suffer an injury mid-month. He dished out two assists in the month offensively, his first two points of the season. The native of Regina, Saskatchewan has struggled to find consistent playing time. As a result, his play has been a little up and down. When Williams gets his next opportunity, he has to find a way to make an impact. That is the only way he is going to find his way back into the lineup on a consistent basis.
Trending: Down
Tobias Geisser – D – Drafted Fourth-Round, 2017 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old.
The Swiss-born defenseman played in five games in November, going scoreless in those five games. Defensively, things did not go well for Geisser. He was a minus-8 in the games he did play, which is not the kind of performance that is going to earn Geisser more playing time on a crowded blueline. Playing time for defensemen would be scarce this season with the number of blueliners in Hershey, and Geisser has been the odd man out so far. With Tyler Lewington back in Hershey and Lucas Johansen’s eventual return from injury, a stint in South Carolina may be in order for the Swiss defender.
Trending: Down
Bobby Nardella – D – Undrafted – 23-years old.
Nardella finally got back into the lineup on November 2. It was only his second appearance on the season. The Notre Dame product took advantage and had two assists in Hershey’s 5-3 win over Providence. The helper on Erik Burgdoerfer’s opening goal was Nardella’s first professional point. He was in the lineup again on November 3 against Syracuse. The Rosemont, Illinois native assisted on Matt Moulson’s goal in the first period. Unfortunately for Nardella, he was injured in the third period when he was hit into the boards by Mitchell Stephens. Nardella hit shoulder first and exited the game. He has been out since with an upper-body injury.
Trending: Up
Liam O’Brien – LW – Undrafted – 25-years-old.
Offensively, November was a good month for O’Brien. He ended the month with two goals and four assists for six points, three more points than he had in October. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native finished the month on a three-game assist streak. Unfortunately, the longtime issues with O’Brien resurfaced in the final game of November. With the Bears up 1-0 over Belleville, O’Brien received a five-minute major and a game-misconduct for a cross-check to the head. Belleville tallied early on the major power play and then took the lead late in the power play when the Bears were down two men. As one of the team’s leaders, O’Brien needs to avoid putting himself in these situations.

Shane Gersich – LW/C – Drafted Fifth-Round, 2014 NHL Entry Draft – 23-years old.
Gersich scored his first goal of the season, a shorthanded tally, against Providence on November 2 and added an assist in the same game. He then went on an eight-game, scoreless drought. The Chaska, Minnesota native broke the drought with another two-point game versus Providence. He netted his second goal of the season in that game, which was also his second shorthanded goal of the campaign. On the season, he has two goals and five assists. Gersich has played well on the penalty kill and his own zone. Against Providence on November 27, he hustled back and broke up a scoring chance with his stick on the back check.
Trending: Same
Joe Snively – LW – Undrafted – 23-years old.
After a very slow start, Snively has shown signs of life. He had two points through his first 15 games and was dropped down into the bottom six. The Yale product’s overall play began to improve. He has amassed five points in a four-game point streak. He potted his second goal of the season on November 23 at Bridgeport. The Herndon, Virginia native followed that with a goal at Providence on the following afternoon. Snively then tallied twice against Providence in his next game. The streak has moved Snively into a four-way tie for second place on the team in goals scored and he has earned his way back into a top six role. Considering Snively’s current hot streak and highly marketable hometown status, look for him to possibly get a call-up to Washington in the near term.

Riley Sutter – RW – Drafted Third-Round, 2018 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old.
Sutter was loaned to the Hershey Bears on November 12. Sutter began the season on the Capitals’ “Season Opening Injured Reserve” list after suffering an injury in the Capitals’ prospect tournament in Nashville in early September. Sutter has an assist in four games played in November.

Kody Clark – RW – Drafted Second-Round, 2018 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years-old
Clark was officially loaned to the Hershey Bears on November 22. Clark was also on the Capitals’ “Season Opening Injured Reserve” list after also sustaining an injury in the Capitals’ prospect tournament in Nashville in early September. Clark registered his first career AHL point on Saturday against Belleville. He would provide the secondary assist on the Bears’ first goal by Eddie Whittchow. Clark has played in four games and has one assist.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE (WHL)
Aliaksei Protas – C – Drafted Third-Round, 2019 NHL Entry Draft – 18-years old
“The Viper” had another pretty good month, scoring nine goals and 14 assists in 13 games played in the month of November. For the season, Protas has 18 goals and 24 assists in 27 games played. He’s registered 87 shots for a shooting percentage of 20.7% on the season. Protas finished the month of November first in points and second in goals scored in the WHL. However, after watching eight of his games this month, the most noticeable improvement to his game has been his passing. Protas is showing excellent vision and is reading plays quickly, finding open ice, or finding the open man in the zone. (See weekly reports 7-10 for video examples) He’s also shown improved play on the penalty kill and had an impressive shorthanded steal and score (here) torwards the end of the month. Teammate Spencer Moe was asked about the improvement in Protas’ play so far this season. “He’s got more confidence and a better understanding of our systems after being here with the championship team last year and I think it shows,” Moe added. “He was able to sign a contract with Washington in the summer as a result of that, which is something that all of us are proud of.” At 6’,6”, the question will always be can he move and react quick enough at the next level, but those concerns seem to be tempered a bit after watching the November games. Protas is now in Minsk to take part in Belarus’ camp for the 2020 IIHF World Under-20 Championship – Division 1A. This will be the second consecutive year that Protas represents Belarus at the Division 1A tournament. Last year, he had five points (two goals, three assists) in five games as Belarus finished in second place. He also suited up for Belarus at the 2018 World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

Eric Florchuk – C – Drafted Seventh-Round, 2017 NHL Entry Draft – 19-years old
Florchuk began the month of November on a hot streak, scoring four goals in the first three games of the month, and eight goals in his last nine games dating back to the previous month. But the scoring dried up for Florchuk scoring no goals and just two assists in the middle six games of the month. He registered just eight shots in those same six games. On Friday, November 22, Florchuk was a scratch due to illness. For the season, Florchuk has 10 goals and five assists in 23 games. He’s only managed to shoot 37 times so far this season, giving him a shooting percentage of 27.1%. He was spotted at the 1C position for a majority of the month.

Alex Kannok-Leipert – D – Drafted sixth-round, 2018 NHL Entry Draft – 19-years old
Kannok-Leipert had another quiet month for the Giants. The Captain of Vancouver has found a steady home in the top defensive pair with Bowen Byram, the Colorado Avalanche’ s first round pick (#4 overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Kannok-Leipert, a stay-at-home, shutdown defenseman will never contribute large numbers offensively. He has a goal and six assists in 26 games played. He’s registered 42 shots for a shooting percentage of 2.4%. Kannok-Leipert, a right-hander, will be in the mix in Hershey next fall.

Connor McMichael – C – Drafted first-round, 2019 NHL Entry Draft – 18-years-old
Connor McMichael took a hot first month of the OHL season and somehow improved on it. After 26 points in the 12-game opening month, he’s registered 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 12 games in November. McMichael is also on an incredible, 17-game point streak that began on October 18. He’s had five games tallying at least three points including hat tricks against Erie on November 1 and rival Kitchener on November 22. He was credited with three assists as well in the Erie game for a six-point night and was plus-9 for the month. As he was multiple times in October, McMichael was named to the Vaughan “Team of The Week” again twice this month. Named for the week of October 28 to November 3 in four games (four goals, four assists) and again for November 18-24 in three games (three goals, five assists). This past month saw McMichael suit up in the annual OHL/Russia Select SuperSeries for two games in Kitchener (November 7) and London (November 11). He scored a goal on two shots with a plus-1 rating in Kitchener during a 4-1 OHL win and scored again in his home rink with four shots in London throughout a 4-3 shootout loss. He didn’t convert as the first shooter for Team OHL in extra time. As of December 2, he leads all of the OHL in scoring with 56 points and his 25 goals have him in second place, three back of Hamilton’s Arthur Kaliyev (28). Also a dynamic passer, he is also only three back in the OHL in assists with 31. On special teams, he leads the OHL in goals (nine), assists (14) and points (23) and has chipped in with two short-handed goals as he continues to progress on his defensive side under London coach Dale Hunter.

The Latvian defenseman scored a goal and had an assist on November 15 in a win over the Indy Fuel. Bindulis is a plus-7 on the season.

Damien Riat – D – Drafted Fourth-Round, 2016 NHL Entry Draft – 22–years old.
The 22-year-old took a puck to his face in a game against HC Lugano on November 2. The incident resulted in a concussion and a few days in the hospital. Riat was released from the hospital on Tuesday (11/5) and is expected to be out of the lineup until the first week of December. Riat was invited to take part in the Deutschland Cup, but as reported in our weekly updates, will be replaced by Luca Hischier. The Swiss forward dressed for two games without producing a point, before getting injured. For the season, Riat has two goals and four assists in 16 games played so far this season. Rumors have begun to surface as to what Riat’s next move will be. “There is a lot of interest in Damien, especially from the KHL and Sweden,” his agent Fred Holdener tells the Journal du Jura. But he also states that his client has not signed anywhere yet and thus denies any rumors about an agreement with SC Bern: “That is completely false”. A decision, however, does not seem to be imminent. The reason is a possible move overseas. First, Riat and his agent want to know about the intentions of the Washington Capitals. On the ice, Riat returned to the lineup in 12/1 after sitting out most of November with the concussion.

Sebastian Walfridsson – D – Drafted Fifth-Round, 2017 NHL Entry Draft – 20-years old
Walfridsson’s team Södertälje SK has struggled a lot during November, and so has the fifth-round pick in the points department, producing only one assist during the month, albeit as a defensive defenseman. Walfridsson is averaging 17:42 minutes per game and has won a solid spot in the lineup, night after night. The continuous playing time is something positive though, and this season is looking like it could be Walfridsson’s first full as a pro player.

Since the last time report, he has played six games for HC Dalen. In a rather low-ranked league, more is expected more from him, after producing decent numbers in the WHL last year. The transition from junior to senior is tough, and it seems like Røykås Marthinsen isn’t quite there yet.

Benton Maass – D – Drafted Sixth-round, 2017 NHL Entry Draft – 19-years old
The 2019-2020 UNH team is relatively young with only three seniors who play regularly. Although they are currently a .500 team (7-6-1 Overall; 3-4-0 Hockey East), they have the 3rd best goals against average (2.14) in Hockey East. Benton Maass, a junior, is the starting right defenseman in most UNH games and on their first penalty kill unit. In November, UNH defeated two nationally-ranked teams – #15 Boston College and #2 UMass. Benton Maass came up big in the defensive zone in both victories. In a 1-0 overtime win against Boston College on November 1st, Maass lead the team with 5 blocked shots. On November 10th, UNH downed UMass 3-1. Once again, Maass had a team-leading 5 blocked shots. These video highlights show several of Maass’s key defensive plays in these big wins, including on the UNH penalty kill. Maass and UNH were in Northern Ireland for the annual “Friendship Four” event during the last weekend in November. They fell to Northeastern 4-0 on November 29 and beat Princeton 3-2 on November 30. Gibson also earned ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors on November 11. (Here) Unfortunately, he would leave the game against Rensselaer on November 22 with a lower-body injury.
