Connor McMichael Scores Third Hat Trick In 20 Games; Joe Snively Scores In Back-To-Back Games; Beck Malenstyn Makes NHL Debut; Week 10 Prospect Update

Welcome to the week 10 Washington Capitals prospect report. The following includes game action and news that occurred between November 18 and November 24, 2019. MONTHLY PROSPECT REPORTS

AHL/HERSHEY BEARS
It was a relatively light work week for the Bears, with just two games on the schedule. Martin Fehervary and Joe Snively scored in the Bears 3-2 loss Saturday night in Bridgeport, as the offense continued to struggle generating many high-danger opportunities. The Bears had just 20 shots on goal in the game. The story was much the same on Sunday as the Bears fell 6-3 to the Providence Bruins. Offense and power play continue to be a concern for the Bears so far this season. The Bears are a pedestrian 8-8-2-2 in the first 20 games this season.

Pheonix Copley – Copley had a decent outing on Saturday night in Bridgeport. He stopped 22 of 25 shots in the game. For the season, Copley is now 4-5-3-1 with a 2.46 GAA and a .904 save percentage.

Vitek Vanecek – Vanecek was returned to the Bears on Wednesday, and would start the final game of the week at Providence on Sunday. He stopped 27 of 32 in the 6-3 loss, but in his defense, it was his first game action in two weeks. For the season Vanecek is 4-3-1-0, with a 2.94 GAA and a .886 save percentage.

Beck Malenstyn – Malenstyn was called up to 5e Capitals on Wednesday 11/20 and played that night against the Rangers at MSG. In his debut, Malenstyn registered three shots on goal and skated 10:02, including 2:03 shorthanded, the third-most shorthanded time on ice among Capitals forwards. He looked comfortable, solid on the ice, and nearly had a goal in the first period.

Malenstyn caught Reirden’s attention in training camp, and as we’ve learned, that’s very important to the call-up pecking order.

Joe Snively – Snively was the one bright spot offensively for the Bears this weekend. He scored in both games. On Saturday Snively would fire a shot from the slot for the Bears second goal.

On Sunday, Snively was moved up to the top line and would score again. He showed excellent awareness and reaction to a shot/pass from the left point by Alex Alexeyev that bounced off the boards from behind the goal. Snively quickly anticipated and reacted with a backhanded finish for the score.

For the season, Snively has three goals and two assists in 18 games played so far. He has scored in back-to-back games and now has a three-game point streak for the first time in his professional career.

Martin Fehervary – Fehervary scored his third goal of the season Saturday night in Bridgeport.

For the season, Fehervary has three goals and six assists in 17 games played. Fehervary and Alexeyev continue to lead all Bears rookies in points with nine.

Garret Pilon – Scored his second goal of the season on Sunday. Pilon has shown some preliminary signs of coming out of his early season slump, but for the season, has just two goals and four assists in 19 games played.

Shane Gersich – scored his second goal of the season, a shorthanded tally against Providence on Sunday. Both of Gersich’s goals this season have been shorthanded. He is another Bears forward that needs to pick up production.

WHL/OHL

Connor McMichael
McMichael had three secondary assists in Thursday nights 5-2 win over the Steelheads in Mississauga. The assists extended McMichael’s point streak to 12 consecutive games. He has 20g, 26a in 19 games played.

On Friday night against Kitchener, McMichael would tally his third hat trick of the season. He scored a 5-0n-3 goal in the second period to get the ball rolling. It was his 21st goal of the season.

He would score his second goal at even strength later in the middle frame.

He would complete the second period hat trick with a power play goal late in the second period.

McMichael would also register a beautiful assist in the second period.

On Sunday, McMichael had a secondary assist to bring his season totals to 23 goals and 28 assists (51 points) in 21 games. He’s shot 91 times for a 25.3% shooting percentage. He is tied for first in points and second in goals in the OHL. Look for more league awards to be given to McMichael this week.

Aliaksei Protas
Wednesday night Protas scored the Raiders 6th goal in a 7-1 drubbing of the Red Deer Rebels. It was his 14th goal of the season. He had a goal and an assist on three shots for the game.

On Friday “The Viper” would score a beautiful short-handed goal in the first period against Lethbridge.

Protas would add an empty net goal to put the game away.

On Saturday Protas had an assist to bring his season totals to 17 goals and 20 assists in 25 games played. He’s registered 83 shots for a shooting percentage of 20.5%. He is tied for first in points and goals in the WHL.

Eric Florchuk
On Friday, Florchuk was a scratch due to illness. On Saturday, Florchuk centered the Blades second line against Seattle.

EUROPE

  • Sebastian Walfridsson – delivered a fierce hit on Wednesday night.

NCAA

  • Benton Maass – Maass and UNH departed for Ireland on Sunday. They will participate in the Friendship Four tournament. Colgate, Princeton and Northeastern will also participate in this year’s tournament.
  • Mitchel Gibson – had the best GAA and save percentage in the NCAA this week. He left in the second period of Friday night’s game with a lower body injury. He made 15 stops before the injury.

    Gersich may be a bust, but as a fifth round pick, fans were simply expecting too much from him.

      Too early to call him a bust, but yes, there was maybe too much hype for the fifth round pick. His best season in college came on a line with NHL’ers Tyson Jost and Brock Boesser, but otherwise his numbers were pedestrian.

    Secondary scoring for the Bears isn’t there. The second year players have yet to catch fire. (Pinho, Gersich, Pilon)
