The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Christian Djoos from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and re-assigned defenseman Tyler Lewington to Hershey, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

The Capitals were able to afford a more expensive defenseman with cap money from the Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) salary pool.

The move maintains seven healthy defensemen on the Capitals current roster for today, and barring another move, on the roster for tomorrow’s matinee tilt with the Canucks.

This season with Hershey, Djoos, 25, has recorded 11 points (1g, 10a) in 18 games and is tied for sixth among AHL defensemen in assists. The 6’0”, 180-pound defenseman played in 45 games with the Capitals last season, recording 10 points (1g, 9a). In 108 career NHL games, all with the Capitals, the Gothenburg, Sweden, native has recorded 24 points (4g, 20a).

Djoos was selected by the Capitals in the seventh round, 195th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft. He is the son of former NHL defenseman Par Djoos, who played for the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers and recorded 33 points (2g, 31a) in 82 career games.

Lewington, 24, has appeared in six games with the Capitals and in two games for Hershey this season. The Edmonton, Alta., native recorded 15 points (3g, 12a) in 65 games with Hershey in 2018-19 and logged 121 penalty minutes, which led the team and ranked tied for ninth in the AHL. Lewington has recorded 49 points (12g, 37a), 501 penalty minutes and has posted a +29 plus/minus rating in 242 career games.
