Capitals’ 2019 First-Round Pick Connor McMichael Scores Hat Trick In London Knights’ Trouncing of Kitchener Rangers

Connor McMichael, the Washington Capitals’ first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has already had himself a fantastic start to the 2019-20 season, with an Ontario Hockey League Player of the Week honors already received multiple times this season. The 18-year old forward continued his torrent start to the season with a hat trick, plus an assist in his London Knights’ 5-1 trouncing of the Kitchener Rangers on Friday night.

McMichael’s first goal came at the 1:07 mark of the second period on a 5-on-3 power play, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. The goal came on assists from teammates Alec Regula and Ryan Merkeley and was McMichael’s 21st tally of the season.

McMichael’s second marker came just 6:13 later, when he beat Rangers’ goalie Nathan Torchia for his 22nd goal of the season and second of the contest to give the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead over Kitchener. Merkeley picked up another assist and Jonathan Gruden was also credited with a helper on McMichael’s second of the night.

The goal to complete his hat trick came at the 15:47 mark of the second period, on another power play. The tally is McMichael’s 23rd in 20 games. Both Gruden and Merkeley picked up helpers on the third goal by McMichael.

McMichael’s assist was a beauty and came on a goal by Gruden, who scored his eighth of the season.

McMichael recorded a hat trick plus an assist all in the second period. The hat trick is his third of the season and he now has 23 goals and 27 assists in 20 games played this season.

McMichael leads the OHL in points (50) and is second in goals (23). The goal leader has played five more games.

    Will he be playing in Washington next season on either the 3rd or 4th line? Imagine him on the 3rd and Eller on the 4th…..wow. And if they bring Backy back on either the 1st or 2nd line they would be very strong down the center.
