The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday morning that they have placed forward Carl Hagelin on long-term injured reserve and center Nic Dowd on injured reserve. Both have missed the past six and three games, respectively, with upper-body injuries. In addition, center Nicklas Backstrom will miss Wednesday’s game at the New York Rangers with an upper-body injury.
Since long-term injured reserve requires a player to miss at least 10 games if placed on it, Hagelin is eligible to return on December 3 at the San Jose Sharks. Dowd can come off of injured reserve tomorrow.
Forwards Beck Malenstyn, Michael Sgarbossa, defenseman Tyler Lewington, and goaltender Ilya Samsonov were recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears for reinforcements. Goaltender Vitek Vanecek was assigned to Hershey. (More here)
The Capitals will almost certainly also miss forward Garnet Hathaway, who had a hearing Wednesday morning with the NHL after spitting on Anaheim Ducks defenseman Erik Gudbranson in the Capitals’ 5-2 win over the Ducks on Monday.
The Capitals announced that all three forwards are listed as day-to-day.

Hagelin on LTIR was sadly inevitable, as we knew when we figured Hathaway was getting suspended.
Nothing in the way of positive/good news here! No goals in Wednesday’s nights game against the Rangers well one! Plus every game up against the cap not a good situation for sure. This team was rolling now this! The Islanders are a great hockey club and the Capitals cannot afford to go on a losing streak.
