Jakub Vrana Scores Hat Trick In Capitals 4-2 Win Over Flames

The Washington Capitals beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 Sunday night at Capital One Arena. The win improves the Capitals record to 11-2-3 (25 points) on the season. The Capitals are back in action on Thursday when they visit the Panthers in Florida. Puck drop is set for just after 7:00PM.


The Flames would score the game’s first tally before Jakub Vrana tied things up midway through the first frame. He would add two more goals for the Hat Trick in the middle period for a 3-2 Capitals lead at the second intermission. Lars Eller would add another Capitals goal early in the final frame making it 4-2, and that would be the final.

Ilya Samsonov (4-1-0, 2.46 GAA, .913 save percentage) got the start between the pipes for the Capitals. Cam Talbot (3-1-2, 2.46 GAA, .908 sv%) got the start in goal for the visiting Flames. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:

Scratches: Nic Dowd (injury) Liam O’Brien and Tyler Lewington. Liam O’Brien was recalled by the Capitals on Friday.

The Flames would open the scoring with a goal from Andrew Mangiapane at 5:40 of the first period.

Jakub Vrana would tie the game with a goal at 11:01 of the first period. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson were credited with the helpers.

Jakub Vrana would score again at 15:08, giving the Capitals their first lead of the game. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitri Orlov were credited with the helpers.

The Flames would tie the game in the waning second of the period to make it 2-2. Elias Lindholm would pot the marker.

The period would end with the game tied 2-2. Washington led in shots on goal 10-7. The Flames out-attempted the Capitals 22-18.

The Capitals would make it 3-2 with Jakub Vrana’s third goal of the night.

That would be all of the scoring in the second period. The Capitals led 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The Capitals would stretch their lead to 4-2 with a goal from Lars Eller at 2:20 of the final frame. Tom Wilson was credited with the lone assist.

And that would be the final.
