Goaltender Ilya Samsonov will get the start in goal when the Washington Capitals host the Calgary Flames at Capital One Arena on Sunday night (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington locally and NHL Network nationally) for his second start in four games. Samsonov has won all of his four starts this season, posting a .913 save percentage in the process.
Captain Alex Ovechkin will appear in his 1100th career NHL game, all with the Capitals, against the Flames.
Center Nic Dowd (lower-body injury) will not play against the Flames but is hopeful that he can play in the Capitals’ next game, at the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. He, along with forward Richard Panik (upper-body), skated on Sunday morning.
Goaltender Cam Talbot will get the net for the Flames after David Rittich made 43 saves in the team’s 3-0 shutout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.
Flames head coach Bill Peters said that if forward Milan Lucic is suspended by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety after sucker-punching Blue Jackets forward Kole Sherwood, the team will dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen against the Capitals. Lucic will have a hearing prior to the game.
