On their first day off of the 2019-20 season, the Washington Capitals spoiled it for some players as they cut 18 from their roster, though there were few surprises.
The following players have been loaned to their respective junior teams: Connor McMichael (London; OHL), Aliaksei Protas (Prince Albert; WHL), Eric Florchuk (Saskatoon; WHL), Alex Kannok-Leipert (Vancouver; WHL).
Damien Riat has been returned to his European team (Biel; Swiss NLA).
The following players have been sent to Hershey: Casey Bailey, Erik Burgdoerfer, Tommy Hughes, Kale Kessy, Chris McCarthy, Matt Moulson, Logan Thompson, Matthew Weis, Steven Whitney. The Bears open camp next week.
Goaltenders Beck Warm and Hayden Hawkey were both released from their amateur tryouts.
The following players will continue injury rehabilitation in Hershey: Kody Clark (upper body) and Riley Sutter (upper body).
The roster is now down to 44 players (24 forwards, 16 defensemen, and four goaltenders).
The deadline to submit the 23-man opening night roster will be at 5 PM ET on Tuesday, October 1, one day before the team opens the season at the defending Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues.
The Capitals will make more roster cuts between now and then.
The updated roster can be found below.

Guess Hayden Hawkey wasn’t good enough in hockey for the Caps tastes (or to even get much of a chance since there were too many other guys). And Beck Warm did not give the management a warm and fuzzy enough feeling to management for them to keep him.
