Capitals Prospects Fall To Predators Prospects 3-2 (OT) In Game 2 Of The 2019 Prospect Tournament

The Washington Capitals prospects fell to the Nashville Predators prospects 3-2 (OT) in the second game of the 2019 prospect showcase Sunday afternoon at the Ford Ice Center in Antioch, Tennessee. The Capitals prospects will next face the Tampa Bay Lightning prospects on Tuesday morning to conclude the tournament. Puck drop is set for 11:00 AM EST. TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
The tournament is for skaters and goaltenders on entry-level contracts (or less), aged 24 or younger, and with 20 or fewer games of NHL experience. Exceptions can be made with the prior approval of each of the other teams in the tourney.

Teams will dress two goalies and 18 skaters, a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period will be played in the event of a tie, and every game will be followed by a shootout – five players per team – regardless of the score. Players are permitted one fight in the tourney; a second fighting major will disqualify the player for the remainder of the tournament.

GAME 2 LINEUP
The Capitals started Logan Thompson in goal. Beck Warm was the backup.

The Predators beat Tampa Bay 4-1 in their opening game of the tournament on Saturday.

GAME RECAP

First Period
The Capitals and Predators battled to a scoreless draw through the first ten minutes of the contest. The Capitals led in shots 6-2.

The Capitals would break the seal with a goal from Kody Clark late in the opening frame. Beck Malenstyn would get the assist. Connor McMichael would make the initial drive and take the initial shot, with Clark driving home the rebound.

The first period would conclude with the Capitals leading 1-0. Logan Thompson was strong in net, making all eight saves.

Second Period
The Predators would tie the game just 37 seconds into the middle frame with a goal from the right side by Rem Pitlick.

Shots on goal were 17-17 with five minutes remaining in the second period.

The Capitals would go to their first power play of the tournament with less than a minute remaining in the middle frame. McMichael, Leason, Snively Pilon and Alexeyev formed the Capitals power play unit.

The Predators were assessed a five-minute major for a dirty hit from Josh Healey on Capitals defenseman Alex Alexeyev as time expired in the second period.

The second period would expire with the game tied 1-1.

Third Period
The Capitals opened the third with 1:14 left on the 5-on-3 power play. The Capitals would be unable to capitalize on the five minute power play.

The Capitals would regain the lead with a breakaway goal from Brian Pinho, his third goal in less than two games of the tournament.

The Predators would tie the game with 6:40 remaining in the final frame with a dirty net front goal.

Connor McMichael would be awarded a penalty shot near the five minute mark but could not convert.

Regulation would end with the game tied 2-2.

OVERTIME
The Predators would win it in 3-on-3 overtime. Tolvanen would pot the game winner at 1:19 of OT. One-timer from the right circle.

SHOOTOUT
Regardless of the score, each game in the tournament will end with a five-player shootout. Cody Clark was denied, Brian Pinho would score, Bobby Nardello was denied, Connor McMichael would score and Joe Snively would be denied. The Capitals Logan Thompson would stop two of five in the shootout.

  • Alex Alexeyev would leave the game at the end of the second period and not return.
  • The Capitals prospects will have the day off on Monday and conclude the tournament Tuesday morning.

    Looks like Alexeyev dodged the bullet and only got his “bell rung”

    He is a target, and the NHL has an abundance of cheap shot artists — especially Tampa Bay! Young A-A needs to have sharp radar in Tuesday morning’s game

    Two games, and a pretty good showing by the Baby Caps. The look inspired — much more so than the sleepwalking Caps of the 2019 playoffs
