Earlier this afternoon, the Hershey Bears announced the signing of 25-year-old defenseman Tariq Hammond. Hammond most recently played for the Binghamton Devils.
The former University of Denver Captain won an NCAA championship in 2016-2017. His rookie season saw Hammond post a goal and three points. The Bears should look to develop the prospect into a strong defenseman that could help them make deep runs in the Calder Cup Playoffs. With the addition of Erik Burgdoerfer and Tommy Hughes, the Bears’ defense has gotten a much-needed upgrade. After last season and the loss of a few essential defensemen, the signing of Hammond should strengthen up the blue line.
Hammond is a 6’2 194 lb. left handed player from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has appeared in 125 total combined games throughout his collegiate career and has recorded six goals, 26 points, and a +28 rating. While Hammonds play may not be as good offensively, the Bears acquired him for his defensive mindset and aggressive style of play. Hammond looks to have a breakout year for the Bears as they aim to have a successful season and advance further into the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The native of Calgary, Alberta played four seasons at the University of Denver from 2014-18, skating under the direction of former Bears forward Jim Montgomery. Hammond was a member of DU’s 2017 NCAA Championship team, playing in all 44 games that season, scoring nine points (three goals, six assists). He served as Denver’s captain in 2017-18, helping the team to an NCHC conference title. In total, Hammond played in 125 NCAA games with the Pioneers, scoring 26 points (six goals, 20 assists).
