Saturday marked the final day of the Capitals 2019 Development Camp, taking place at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, Virginia. The camp’s final event of the week was the annual Development Camp scrimmage, which featured all camp invitees in 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 game action.

This years scrimmage was divided into two 20-minute halfs. The first 10 minutes of each half was 4-on-4, with the last 10 minutes 3-on-3.

Forward Kody Clark was scratched due to an injury he sustained this week during development camp.

FIRST HALF

Mitchell Gibson (57) started between the pipes for Team Red. Beck Warm (60) got the start in goal for Team White. Logan Thompson spelled Gibson with Andrian Clark (50) spelled Warm intermittently throughout each half.

The first 10 minutes of 4-on-4 action would go scoreless, with pretty nice play from the goaltenders.

At the start of 3-on-3, defender Martin Fehervary (42) made a full ice run of the left wing, blowing by a gassed Shane Gersich (63) and let a nice wrister go, but Warm made a beautiful snag. Warm would be strong throughout this contest.

Team White would finally notch the game’s first goal with a nice rush from Eric Florchuk. Florchuk would come-in off the bench during 3-on-3 play and find a seam down the middle. He was unable to finish the initial rush, but managed to tuck the puck on the wrap-around.

The first period would conclude with Team Red leading 1-0. Eric Florchuk, Beck Warm and Mitchell Gibson were the standouts in the first period.

SECOND HALF

The 4-on-4 portion of the second half once again went scoreless. Damien Riat turned-in the move of the 4-on-4 play, with a nice toe-drag and deke, but could not get the finish on the backhander.

After the game’s first penalty was called on Team White for tripping, Team Red had a 3-on-2 (yes, 3-on-2) power play. Team White’s Alexander Alexeyev forced a shorthanded break-away, but couldn’t finish, as Mitchell Gibson stopped him cold.

Team Red finally tied the game with a tally from Connor McMichael, the Capitals first round draft pick in last weekends NHL Entry Draft. McMichael made a nifty pick and finished on the break-away.

Shane Gersich had a clean break away late in the second half, but would lose the handle in front of the net.

Garrett Pilon would break the tie with a nice backhander to give Team Red a 2-1 lead with a minute remaining in regulation.

But Team White would answer in the waning moments of regulation with a nice goal from Riley Sutter from the right circle, making it 2-2. Sutter showed good poise in circling the net and waiting for his best opportunity.
