The Washington Capitals have signed center Mike Sgarbossa to a two-year, two-way contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. The contract will carry an average annual value of $700,000 and $407,500 in the AHL.
FROM CAPITALS MEDIA RELEASE
Sgarbossa, 26, led the Hershey Bears with 65 points (30g, 35a), which tied for ninth in the AHL and set personal AHL career highs in goals, assists and points. The Campbellville, Ont., native’s 65 points were the most by a Bear since Chris Bourque’s 80 points (30g, 50a) in the 2015-16 season. Additionally, the 6’0”, 185-pound forward added another three points (1g, 2a) in five playoff games.
Sgarbossa has recorded 10 points (2g, 8a) in 48 career NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks, the Florida Panthers and the Colorado Avalanche. In 387 AHL games between Hershey, the Manitoba Moose, the Springfield Thunderbirds, the San Diego Gulls, the Norfolk Admirals and the Lake Erie Monsters, Sgarbossa has recorded 264 points (102g, 162a) and was an AHL All Star in 2013.
In his final season in the Ontario Hockey League, Sgarbossa led the League with 102 points (47g, 55a) and was a member of the OHL First All Star team in 2012.
It’s about time!
Sgarbossa has played fabulous forward for Hershey for several years, and he has a bunch of NHL experience. Watching Sg play in Hershey, he is inspired and HUNGRY and it shows. Sg is solid and “two-way” as the catchword goes these days.
So “give the man a contract” GMBM does the right thing. A high achiever in the Farm Systems gets his chance to make the big club. Let’s Go Mike Sg! Make the team, and give us 75 games at +22.
Yea, that was almost a must signing. Still need at least one more seasoned vet forward in Hershey for next season, plenty of youngsters.
