One of the biggest subjects of conversations after Game 3 of the First Round series between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes was the fight between Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and Hurricanes rookie forward Andrei Svechnikov 10:59 into the Hurricanes’ 5-0 win on Monday night. After missing the Hurricanes’ 2-1 win in Game 4 due to a concussion that was suffered from a knockout punch in the fight, Svechnikov stated that Ovechkin invited him to dance while Ovechkin told reporters after the game that Svechnikov sparked the altercation.

“He ask me first for fight,” Svechnikov told Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. “I’m not a superhero, ask first for fight… I said yes. I just want to stand up for myself.”

Sara Civ of the Athletic said that Ovechkin approached Svechnikov after the game and apologized.

Svechnikov, 19, has skated with the Hurricanes the past few days but has worn a non-contact jersey in practice. He will not play in Game 5 of the series on Saturday (8 PM ET, NBC) but was hopeful that he could return in Game 6 on Monday at PNC Arena.

The best-of-seven series is knotted at two games apiece.

The Hurricanes will also be without forwards Michael Ferland, who left Game 3 with an upper-body injury, and Jordan Martinook, who left Game 4 with a lower-body injury, while the Capitals will be without forward T.J. Oshie, who left the third period of Game 4 with an upper-body injury, in Game 5.

Wouldn’t be a big deal, except for the fact the story is different for each player. Carolina claims Ovi goaded him.

Svechnikov stuck his head in the loins mouth, that’s all that happened.
