Islanders Down Capitals 3-0 in Regular Season Finale

The Washington Capitals wrapped up the regular season with a 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders Saturday evening at Capital One Arena. The Capitals end the regular season with a record of 48-26-8 (104 points) on the season.

Pheonix Copley (16-6-0-3, 2.94 GAA, .904 sv%) started in goal for the defending champions. Robin Lehner (24-13-5, 2.18 GAA, .928 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the visiting Islanders. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:



Scratches: T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson.

The Capitals and Islanders skated to a scoreless first frame. The Capitals led in shot attempts 19-13 for the first 20 minutes. Shots on goal were tied 8-8. There were no penalties/power plays in the first frame.

The Islanders would open the scoring with a goal from Valtteri Filppula at 2:55 of the second period.

The second period would end with the Islanders leading 1-0. The Capitals outshot the Islanders 10-6 for the second period. Both teams were 0 for 1 on the power play in the middle frame.

The Islanders would add to their lead with a goal from Valtteri Filppula at 10:54 of the final frame.

The Islanders would add an empty net goal from Matt Martin to make it 3-0.
