Alex Ovechkin scored his 49th goal of the 2018-19 season against the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night.  It was the go-ahead goal for the Capitals, as he scored it at 4:39 in the third period with the score 1-1 at the time.

Ovechkin’s 49th goal of the season was also his 656th career goal, tying him with Brendan Shanahan for 13th on the All Time Goal Scoring List.   His next goal would give him sole possession of thirteenth place for career goals.

His next target after that on the All Time List would be Luc Robitaille, who ranks #12 on the All Time Goal Scoring list with 668.  Ovechkin will likely achieve that milestone early in the 2019-20 season.

Ovechkin’s 49th goal came in a 4-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes who sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division and are hoping to make it to the playoffs.  This game also featured John Carlson’s 400th career point which allowed him to become the Caps’ fifth defenseman to achieve that milestone.

This particular goal is also the 107th game-winning goal in the NHL that Ovechkin scored in his career as he passed Patrick Marleau (106) for sole possession of seventh place on the all-time list. He is now just two game-winners Brendan Shanahan (109) for sixth place. Ovechkin is also just one goal shy of becoming the third player in NHL history with at least eight 50-goal seasons; Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky share the record with nine.
