Washington Capitals head coach Todd Reirden that defenseman Michal Kempny, who suffered a lower-body injury after wrestling with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Cedric Paquette in a scrum during the second period of the Capitals’ 5-4 overtime loss to the Lightning on Wednesday, will be out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. He also stated that his leg is still getting looked at. Reirden did not give Kempny an expected return date.

Kempny leads the Capitals with a +24 rating and has set career-highs with six goals and 25 points while averaging 19:11 worth of ice-time per game and playing alongside defenseman John Carlson on the top defensive-pair. Losing him is a huge blow for the Capitals.

With Kempny out, defenseman Christian Djoos will skate in his place next to Carlson when the Capitals host the Minnesota Wild on Friday night (7 PM, NBC Sports Washington or NHL Network nationally).

Reirden also stated that the Capitals will likely not call anybody up from the AHL’s Hershey Bears at the moment.

Kempny missed two preseason games and the first two games of the regular season with a concussion suffered from a hit by St. Louis Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo on Septermber 25.

He posted two goals, five points, and a +1 rating while playing all 24 games in the Capitals’ run to the Stanley Cup last season.

Well Kempny’s injury, if he’s done for the season, will definitely impact their chances of repeating as Stanley Cup Champions. Even with that said the two recent loses to Tampa Bay has given me. cause for concern. Bottom line say what you want about the compete level during these two games the Capitals lost. Would of could of should of means nothing. They have issues at the faceoff circles defensively not as strong as last years team. The once potent power play is lacking and the pk is inconsistent and struggles at times.

Pk has been bad most of the season, inconsistent is just being generous. PP is fine, just needs to be less predictable. As for faceoffs been bad most of the year.
