In the Capitals’ Sunday night game against the Anaheim Ducks, captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season, his 10th 40-goal season of his career.
The goal came just 4:58 into the first period. The goal was prototypical Ovechkin:
The 2018-19 season is the 10th season in which Ovechkin has scored 40 or more goals, something only three other players in NHL history have accomplished: “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky finished his career having done so 12 times; longtime Los Angeles Kings great Marcel Dionne accomplished the feat 10 times, and Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux also did it 10 times in his career. The goal puts him 10 shy of his eighth 50-goal season.
He has scored 40 or more goals in the following seasons: 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, and 2018-19 and has scored 50 or more goals in seven seasons.
