Todd Reirden, Coaches Announced For 2019 NHL All-Star Game

The National Hockey League announced today that Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning (Atlantic), Paul Maurice of the Winnipeg Jets (Central), Todd Reirden of the Washington Capitals (Metropolitan) and Bill Peters of the Calgary Flames (Pacific) will serve as the head coaches for the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, which will be held Jan. 25-26 in San Jose. 

In his first season as Capitals head coach, Reirden, 47, has the Capitals tied for first in the Metropolitan Division and third in the Eastern Conference with the Pittsburgh Penguins (52 points).

This is the third time in the past four seasons that the Capitals’ head coach got named to coach the Metropolitan Division All-Stars. Current New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz coached Metro All-Stars in 2016 and again last season.

Tampa Bay Lightning’s head coach Jon Cooper (Atlantic), Winnipeg Jets’ head coach Paul Maurice (Central), and Calgary Flames’ head coach Bill Peters (Pacific) were chosen as the other head coaches for the All-Star teams.

Under the All-Star selection process, the head coach of the team with the highest points percentage (points earned divided by total possible points) in each of the four divisions through games of Saturday, Jan. 5 – the halfway point of the regular season – will guide the respective All-Star rosters.

Cooper’s Lightning (.805, 32-7-2), Maurice’s Jets (.650, 25-13-2), Reirden’s Capitals (.650, 24‑12‑4) and Peters’ Flames(.643, 25-13-4) already have secured the highest points percentages in their respective divisions through today’s games.

2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend Rosters

The NHL announced on Wednesday the four divisional rosters for the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend as well as the launch of the 2019 NHL All-Star Last Men In presented by Adidas which now is open.

The Last Men In vote allows fans to decide the final player on each All-Star roster from a list of 31 candidates – one from each NHL team. For the Capitals, center Nicklas Backstrom is on the ballot.

Voting closes Thursday, Jan. 10, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend Information

The 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend will once again consist of a three-game tournament, played in a 3-on-3 format, featuring four teams – one for each NHL division.

The Sharks and city of San Jose will host the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, from Jan. 25‑26, including the 2019 SAP NHL All-Star Skills on Friday, Jan. 25 (6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS) and the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Saturday, Jan. 26 (5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, SN, TVAS). The 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend marks the second time NHL All-Star activities will take place in San Jose. The Sharks previously hosted the event in 1997.

    Excellent. Reirden is a great coach – love his interviews with radio and TV announcers. He give in-depth responses to questions. He is a hockey player’s perfect coach! Most of all I like his firmness! We are so lucky to have him! Congrats!
