Capitals’ Morning Skate News Roundup: Kuznetsov Skates For First Time

The Washington Capitals held a morning skate at Barclays Center in Brooklyn prior to their game against the New York Islanders tonight at 7 PM. The game can be seen on NBC Sports Washington. Here are all of the news from the Capitals morning skate: 

Center Evgeny Kuznetsov skated after the morning skate but did not participate with the team, meaning that he’s making progress but will likely miss a sixth straight game with a concussion.

Defenseman Madison Bowey will play after being a healthy scratch in Saturday’s 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.

Goaltender Braden Holtby will start for the Capitals.

Capitals Lines at Islanders 


-During the team’s season-high five-game winning streak, 10 different players have recorded a goal and 17 of the 18 skaters that have played at least two games have recorded a point; forward Tom Wilson leads the team with eight points (three goals) in that span and captain Alex Ovechkin leads the Capitals with five goals

-The Capitals are 11-4-3 in their past 18 games against the Islanders

-Ovechkin has recorded 52 points (34 goals) in 50 career games against the Islanders

-Defenseman John Carlson became the first defenseman in franchise history to record 25 points through his first 22 games of a season with three assists in Saturday’s win over the Rangers

-Tonight marks the final game of the Capitals’ Fathers and Mentors Trip; since 2008, the Capitals have posted a 14-6-0 record with their mentors in attendance

-Since Wilson’s season debut on November 13, the Capitals have killed 20 of the 23 penalties they’ve faced (87%), a 15.3% better penalty kill rate than their previous 16 games (43 kills out of 60 opportunities)

-The team scored three goals in the second period against the Rangers on Saturday and have scored an NHL-best 35 second-period goals this season.
