Bears Fall to Phantoms 6-2

The Hershey Bears fell to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 6-2 Friday night in Allentown. The loss drops the Bears record to 8-10-0-1. The Bears are back in action Saturday when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Puck drop is set for 7:05PM ET. 

The Bears would strike first with a goal from Beck Malenstyn early in the opening frame, but the Phantoms answered midway through the period for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission. The Phantoms would take a 3-1 lead before Jayson Megna added his 4th goal of the season for a 3-2 Phantoms lead at the second intermission. The Phantoms would add some cushion with a goal midway through the final frame to make it 4-2. The Phantoms would add two late goals for the 6-2 win.

STARTERS
Ilya Samsonov (3-5-0, 3.73 GAA, .875 sv%) started between the pipes for the visiting Bears. Carter Hart (4-3-2, 3.52 GAA, .884 sv%) got the start in goal for the Phantoms. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Bears:

Sergei Shumakov returned to the lineup for the first time since October 14. Steve Whitney also returned to the lineup for the first time since October 28. Nathan Walker and Colby Williams were scratched due to lower body injuries and listed as day-to-day. Healthy scratches: Juuso Ikonen, Kris Bindulis.

FIRST PERIOD
The Bears would strike first with a goal from Beck Malenstyn at 3:38 of the first period. The tally was Malenstyn’s second of the season. Connor Hobbs (10) and Brian Pinho (1) were credited with the assists.

The Phantoms would tie the game with a goal from Mike Vecchione at 12:01 of the opening frame.

The period would end with the game tied 1-1. The Bears led in shots on goal 11-7 for the first 20 minutes. The Bears were 0 for 1 and the Phantoms for 1 on the power play.

SECOND PERIOD
The Phantoms would take their first lead with a power play goal by Greg Carey at 2:25 of the middle frame.

The Phantoms would stretch their lead to 3-1 with a goal from Greg Carey at 5:01 of the second period. The goal was scored directly off of the faceoff.

The Bears would cut the Phantoms lead to one goal with a tally from Jayson Megna at 12:01 of the middle frame. Connor Hobbs (11) was credited with the lone helper.

The middle frame would conclude with the Bears trailing 3-2. The Bears outshot the Phantoms 11-10 for the second period. The Bears were 0 for 3 and the Phantoms 2 for 2 on the power play after 40 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD
The Phantoms would stretch their lead to 4-2 with a goal from Philippe Myers at 9:02 of the final frame.

The Phantoms would seal the deal with a goal from Phil Varone at 14:10 of the final frame, making it 5-2. The Phantoms would add a break away goal with 15 seconds left in the game for the 6-2 win.
